Great gun, simple, easy to improve(accuracy) considerably over its' military intent. Military was loose for reliability, .45 for knockdown power. Not very accurate past 25 yards, but it didn't need to be. Most likely, only works with ball ammo.
I have two, a Commander LW made in 1950, and a Gov MKIV. Both looked new and shot poorly or not at all. I have replaced almost everything on the Commander except the slide/frame. Now shoots nicely, never jams, good carry trigger, about 4.5#.
MKIV made about '81 was a basket case, that looked very nice. Nickel plate. Would not go into battery, would not extract a case. top handle screw bushings bad, just under 7# on the trigger, VERY dirty where it didn't show. Polished barrel bushing after proper sizing. Sear was horrible, worked on by amateur. Replaced hammer/sear, polished everything inside, adjusted extractor, tweeked springs, polished barrel ramp, CLEANED. Now shoots fine, no jams, trigger is just under 3#.
