Back in August, I had to draw my weapon in public. I was coming out of Wal-Mart when I observed someone looking into the passenger window of my car (in broad daylight mind you, it was around 9:15 AM). I kept my distance and hit the lock button on my keys to sound the horn and get his attention, hoping he'd run away. Instead he just looks around and goes back to what he was doing. So I get his attention by saying "Hey man, can I help you? That's my car." At which time he promptly pulled a knife and said "F*** you! I'll kill you!" As soon as my gun clears its holster this guy takes off like a bat out of Hell. I keep at the low ready and look around making sure he didn't have any friends with him then immediately call 911. Give the dispatcher a description of the guy and not even 5 minutes later I see two police cars, one turns into Wal-Mart to talk to me, the other continues south on 113. While giving the officer that made contact with me my statement, the other one pulls up with the guy in the back, asking if this was the person I saw. I told him yes and they pulled off. Apparently, he tried running from the officer too. The weirdest thing was, the officer that initially made contact with me asked me why I didn't shoot the guy. I told him the guy was running away, didn't pose a threat anymore.
There are 2 morals to be learned I guess:
1. Read the laws and make sure you understand them fully. The class I took gave us all a copy of Delaware's laws on firearms and use of deadly force.
2. Don't run from the police, you'll just go to jail tired.
