Title: Have to go to Maryland for doctor
Post by: MarkB on August 11, 2014, 01:10:28 PM
Is there a legal way to carry to the DE/MD line and then secure the gun while in MD?

i.e.: unload and lock up the gun in a lock box while in MD?

Or is it best to just go unarmed that day?

Soon I have to take my wife to Elkton, MD for a medical procedure and will return to DE the same day.

I see no legal way. I was born and raised in MD. and have lived in DE. for almost 50 years and when I go to MD I leave my gun locked  up at home. Don't forget MD also will nail you if you are just carrying ammo in your vehicle.
They are the worst anti-gun state in America. And, of course, they are run by Liberal/Progressive Socialist. Gov. O'Malley wants to run for President of the United States? Not only no, but hell no!

I agree. I always leave my sidearm in the safe at home when I know that I'm venturing into PRMD.

Thanks.  I was hoping for a different answer but that's what it is and will be until the MD government is changed.

I am not a lawyer but unless you are going through Maryland to a state where having the gun is legal or you are going to a range in Maryland you would not be legal.

In that you are taking your wife to a medical appointment, you may not have a handgun with you.

I have bought ammo in MD many times and never had a problem taking it back to DE.
I wonder if you can bring ammo into MD without issue?
Besides traveling to a range, of course.

I too have purchased ammo in Maryland and except for the sales tax was same as Delaware.  Are you thinking of New Jersey?

Yeah, isn't it NJ who restricts ammo and the type you're permitted to have? Don't remember ever hearing this regarding MD before.

Read an article a while back about a man that was stopped for speeding and the cop saw spent shotgun shells in his car and he was arrested and charged with carrying ammo. Weird but true.

That sounds like a Washington DC occurrence.

Can you just imagine the run on ammo if this guy even gets close?

Radnor did a search on this subject a while back.  Not sure where to find it but it comes from the MD AG's office.  Yes you can do it.

From the MD State Police FAQ: (https://www.mdsp.org/FAQs.aspx)

How can I legally transport firearms within / through Maryland?
Answer: They must be unloaded, in a carrying case, holster with a flap and the ammunition should be separate. It would be best to keep the unloaded weapon in the trunk where you do not have access to it. There are further regulations but essentially you can only transport a handgun between residence, to and from a repair shop, a shooting sporting event, between a residence and place of business if substantially owned and operated by the person. For more information please contact our Licensing Division.
