This is true except if you stop for GAS or stop to EAT than you are not in direct route to Maine as Could be determined by Local Law Enforcement. Interpretation of the Law.

To be fair to the OP, he wasn't proposing to carry illegally.
He was going to comply with Federal law by locking his unloaded firearm in a case with the ammunition in a separate container.
The fact that Maryland and New Jersey, among other states, routinely violate people's rights does not make the OP careless. It makes MD & NJ a bunch of screaming d******bags.

Those "authorities" do not serve any useful purpose where as that item does.
