Title: Fun in Md
Post by: Just Bill on July 21, 2013, 03:07:28 PM
Just finished another fun filled week at scout camp in the Peoples Republic of Md.  Randor was there and usually woke up the camp with some skeet/trap, and  my AR, .38, or .45.  Had to disassemble all the guns, lock them up away from ammo, just to be safe.  It is OK to transport gun parts anywhere, I think.

Radnor is a good shot with almost any gun, as well as a good instructor, but even he could not make my old Commander perform.  It still needs work, but not sure what kind at this point.  We had one scout whose .22 targets looked more like shotgun blasts.  No fewer than 5 instructors watched and tried to help the guy.  Radnor finally fixed him on the last hour of the last day, he qualified.

It was HOT!!!!!!!

I know NOTHING about a round of trap being shot at 0630 every morning.

The scout who had trouble, I just told him to shoot like grandpa that's all.
It is PRICELESS when you help that one who qualifies just before the 12th hour...

Remember the boy who transferred in mid week?  I sat with his Troop in the dining hall.
His last target before he had to run off to his next class, I had it.  I score the back VS front.
Saw his last qualifier on it and wrote on the back, "I shoot like grandpa.  :)".  I gave it to him
at dinner on Friday face up.  He was just looking at it sad faced because he did not see any
writing on it.  Then I said, "How do I score targets?"  He flipped it over and read what I
wrote on it.  The smile was truly PRICELESS.

Happiness is.....  A warm gun in your hand.

Radnor that's great! Years ago I used to work with kids and have so many unforgettable memories teaching, guiding and helping them. You'll remember that smile for not years but decades.  :)

ABSOLUTELY!  That is why I take vacation and volunteer there.  99.999% of the kids and adults are great to work with.
I do remember the 1....  When we shoot shotgun we shoot in rounds of 10.  He went 0 fer.  He was so mad I thought he was
going to throw the SG into the field!  NEVER have I encountered something like that.  It was a teachable moment for me and
I learned from it.

And Bill, thank you sir for the kind words.

I did not do anything you guys did not already do, I just found a way to present it that made it "click" in the scout's head.
I did learn a few things this week too working rifle merit badge VS SG.  For that, I will always be grateful and hopefully a better instructor.

Radnor, and group. Thanks for helping out with the scouts. They need to know the correct handling of firearms and to be able to shoot fairly accurate.

This is an example of what we need more of, showing our youth that guns are not bad, and used safely, can be fun.
