Title: Remington R51
Post by: Schmenge on June 06, 2014, 01:11:28 AM
I saw this pistol advertised in Cabelas sale paper today. Since I'd never heard of it, I went to Remington's website to take a look. It wasn't there. Nowhere. Hmmm. So I went to Youtube to take a look. Wow! BAD reviews all around. It looks like not just a POS, but dangerous to shoot.

Does anyone have one? I'd like to hear first hand if there are any issues, if they've been resolved, what's the story?

Thanks

It sure doesn't look to have any great reviews 50/50 on Cabelas  - I found this one and it looks like it could be a nice handgun if more work went into fixing it.

Totally agree on the new one that appears to be junk, but my Remington 1911R1 enhanced may be my favorite shooter in my collection.

I got to shoot one of those 1911R1s last month and it was nice.

Just about everything I've read on the R51 has been bad. Not good for their first try at a subcompact handgun. Personally I think they attempted to pull-off way to much with it.

One of the guys at X-Ring told me they had one and he could hardly retract the slide it was so tight. I think he said someone bought it anyway.

It's a hundred year old design, but I think they rushed it through production.

I think I'm going to go with an M&P shield.

Good answer. I carry the M&P Shield using a crossbreed super tuck. It works well no matter how I am dressed.

I was intrigued by the new R51 when it was first announced.  Glad I didn't buy one.

August edition of "Gun Tests" gives it an A rating with a caveat. Remington states that you must use Remington or Barnes ammo. Something about the timing and force of the pressure curve in cycling the slide. They had zero issues with the pistol while using Remington ammo.
Take that as you wish...

There is no mention of the R51 on www.remington.com .

I have not seen any available for sale.  As far as I can tell, Remington has dropped the pistol from production.

All the non-periodical evaluations are reporting multiple problems.  Out of battery discharges, slides extremely hard to cycle, rear sights falling off etc.

They should open outlet stores near major cities like NY, Chicago and LA. Also kiosks in Wilmington and Philly.  Sell them cheap.

There are plenty of firearms at good prices which that have been proven time after time...Glocks, SA, S&W. Pay a bit more but carry a god gun. I never ever buy a gun just because of the price, I buy a gun that I can trust my life.

You missed the most famous Walther .. Ya know Bond and his PPK :) Their entire PP series and PPS and PPQ are all superb firearms. Its unfortunate they don't advertise more here in the US.
