Picked this up yesterday. My father-in-law left it to me. I am not sure what I am going to do with it but it is kinda cool.

In the movie Jeremiah Johnson, Robert Redford carried a Hawken. Great movie. Nice of your father-in-law.

I like the old rifles.. Planning to finish our basement in a couple years for entertainment with a bar/lounge area alongside the games room. Have purchased a few old firearms as wall decorations and have been planning to add a Hawkens rifle or two from the online kit.
Does that have the octagon barrel? Hard to tell but looked like it does.
Agree with CB.. Nice of your father in law. Condolences if he passed on.

Here's what you do with it You shoot it! I have a Hawken 50 cal and can't shoot it enough! I can crank out rounds for hours for about $tree fitty!

Shooting black powder rifles are a lot of fun. I grew up shooting mainly black powder rifles and .22 (all my father's guns). Just make sure you clean it after shooting it. I think my dad always used water and dish detergent followed by Hoppes oil. They are pretty cheap to shoot and maintain unlike most modern guns (unless you reload)

these type rifles are a ton of fun only problem is 10 minutes shooting 2 hours cleaning lol but worth it . this is mine

Thompson Center Hawken in .50 percussion here. As suggested above, tons of fun!!!!! Very dirty(I use black powder not that new fangled stuff). Wait for the smoke to clear to see what you hit....... This one is rifled so is pretty accurate.
