"Firearms have been banned from Newark parks since 1988, but according to state code, the local law isn’t legal.
The anomaly, City Solicitor Bruce Herron explained, dates back to 1985 when the state passed a law preventing municipalities from prohibiting the possession of firearms. However, for some reason, Newark passed its own law banning firearms from city parks three years later."
