Title: What Do You Carry Concealed...and Why?
Post by: fdegree on December 27, 2010, 03:36:25 AM
I was wondering what everyone carries...concealed.  I would like to hear why you chose that particular weapon.

Sig Sauer P232, .380 ACP caliber, 7+1 rounds. I also carry an extra mag.
Chose it because I use a pocket holster, and wanted small, light, reliable.

Most days, I carry a 10mm Glock 29 and a spare mag in a Safepacker... because it's a cannon, and I'm a pessimist.
When I'm keeping it discreet, I carry a .38 S&W 642 in an Uncle Mike's pocket holster.

S&W Bodyguard 380-- Nice shooting gun easy to conceal with an in the waistband holster for places I'm aware of and a
S&W M&P 9C with a crimson trace laser in the waist band holster for carrying packs a little more power for traveling in Wilmington late at night and if I;m really not sure of where I'm going a S&W 40 M&P.  Smith and Wesson makes the best pistol in my mind next to Heckler and Koch if you would like to spend the money as I have.  Just a little pricy to cary along with my S&W 1911.

Glock 19-9 with a laser because it works all the time. Gotten so used to it I don't even know it's there anymore. I installed the laser because I walk early in the mornings (0500-0600) & bad guys stand out better with a flashing red light on them. When I OC I usually carry my Stainless Ruger GP-100 357 which has very good stopping power. I will carry either in a side holster sometimes.

I carry a Kimer Tactical Pro II 45 ACP in a modified Blackhawk Serpa holster.  I also carry 2 spare 8 round magazines with Pow-r-Ball ammo.  A gerber tactical knife, and occasionally a Smith & Wesson Model 37 in an ankle holster (backup gun).

Depends on whether I'm carrying in my purse or on my person and how I'll be dressed.  Casual vs. dressy.

If I'm carrying on my person (and I'm not dressed fancy) Glock 32.357 or Sig Sauer P229 9mm.  If I'm carrying in my purse then SW9VGE or SW40VGE.  If I'm dressed up and have little room to carry concealed, then I'll carry my Taurus .380.

I usually carry a Ruger LCR .38 in an Uncle Mike's pocket holster sometimes with a Beretta 3032 in an Uncle Mike's ankle holster for backup. Occasionally, if I know I'll be keeping my jacket on in the winter, I carry a Colt Commander 9mm in a Blackhawk Serpa concealment holster. I've even carried my XD 45 Tactical under my jacket. Believe it or not, that cannon is fairly easy to conceal under a jacket.

I carry situationally like most everyone on this forum.  Ruger LCP when in summer attire with maybe just a T-shirt on.  For the winter or anytime I have bulkier clothing I carry S&W M&P9C.  I feel comfortable carrying 9mm although I'm sure many in here would say its either not enough or the bare minimum.  Its the cartridge I can control the best and I figure rounds on target is better than rounds missing target.

It depends when and where. Daily as I go to and from work I like to carry a smaller and lighter gun that is easy to get in and out of the belt, and for that I use mostly a SA EMP 9mm. If I am going out at night, weekend,... I carry a commander 1911.

But if I am working outside, or if it is raining, and I know I will get wet I will carry a Glock26 or Glock29!

I carry a Glock 19 in a Minotaur MTAC holster and a spare 15rd magazine in a don Hume leather magazine pouch. I like my Glock because it's small light, i'm able to get a good grip on it and the 9mm gives me fast follow up shots. For ammo i use Golden saber 124 grain hollow points.

My wife has been working in the NJSSR, so she can't carry during the day.
I've been carrying her S&W 340PD in my front pants pocket on the job (business casual). It's much lighter than our 642, but it can be loaded with .357 Magnum if I'm feeling pessimistic that day.

Just received my permit...... Planning on carrying my Glock 23... Just ordered a Crossbreed Supertuck Deluxe....should be here in a few days...

on a side note.... Midway USA has the supertuck in stock, so no 4-6 week wait from Crossbreed. I assume the warranty would still be good? Midway is listed as a vendor on their website. Better shoot an email to be sure I guess.....

I prefer to carry a Kimber Ultra Carry II with 2 spare 10 round mags - because its a .45! Other than that I sometimes carry a Glock 23 with 1 spare mag. Depending on the situation, I often carry a Glock 26 in an ankle holster.

I am not sure I understand your post - you carry two spare mags with your Kimber because it is a .45acp, and one for your Glock 23 (which is a 40). Is it because the magazine holds less rounds than your .40, or some other reason?

I think he was saying he prefered to carry the kimber because it's .45, not carry two spare mags because it's .45...  I'm guessing two mags because they are 10 rnds, giving 30 total rounds... The 23 would be a 13 rnd magazine, so 26 total rnds with 1 spare... So he's carrying about the same amount of rnds regardless of which he chooses to carry...

I'm planning on carrying a Walther PPS (.40)

The magazine capacity is rather limited (5, 6, or 7 round options), but it's compact and has the stopping power I'm looking for.

I'm currently carrying a Beretta M-9 (I'm deployed) in a drop down thigh holster.  It's comfortable, but obviously not the ideal configuration to wear in a civilian environment.   ;)

I really like that gun, and seriously considered it when I was out "trying on" guns for concealed carry.  It was very comfortable and fit well in my hand.  The only reason I decided against it was I had trouble with the mag release.  I guess my thumb is too short to reach far enough forward to push down on the lever reliably enough for my comfort.  If it wasn't for that, I would have that gun now.

I too considered this gun, in 9mm, scratched off after reading numerous failure issues - failure to extract, feed, lock the slide back on last round...

From what I've discovered in my research before I purchased it, those issues were with the 1st gen 9mm.  97% of the reviews I've read (by regular owners) love it and have had no issues.

One thing I have read, many times, is that the weapon should be cleaned and then dry fired approximately 200 times to smooth things out.

I just introduced the seller to x-ring supply for my FFL transfer.

146 days till I leave Afghanistan.  148 days until I can pick up my PPS.   8)

Just got a snubbie, Smith and Wesson 442, .38+. In a Don Hume, slide-type OWB holster it carries as well as my smaller and lighter Kel Tec 3PAT in an IWB type. The S and W has a long but smooth trigger and the kick is not as bad as I remember from my Taurus 85, I had some years ago. In the jacket pocket, it carries better loose, than my Kel Tec in a pocket holster. I cannot carry the KT loose in my pocket for two reasons. It tends to twist around so that I never know which end I am touching ("Is that the square end of the muzzle or the end of the grip?"). Plus, I can get a better grip on the SW, than the KT. I would be real embarrasing if I jerked out the Kel Tec and threw it at an attacker underhanded. That being said, the KT is smaller, so I still use it for summer-time carry, when concealment is paramount.

Springfield XDM 3.8 in .40S&W. 180 gr Hornaday TAP ammo in a Comp/Tac Minotar appendix holster.
As far as why....
Whenever newbies ask me what to purchase for personal defense, I usually recommend a Glock. If that's all you've ever used, you know how it feels and shoots and you get a comfortable grip. And they work and go bang everytime you pull the trigger and are easy to learn to shoot.
For myself however, Glocks don't work. Why? 'Cause I've shot 1911's for over 20 years and the grip angle on a Glock just isn't right for me. If I do the "close your eyes, bring up the gun and open your eyes...." routine, the front sight is pointing somewhere into a 3rd story window. The grip angle is sharper than a 1911. The selling point to the Springfield it was designed with the same grip angle as a 1911 and it just points better for me.

I have the Walther PPS 9mm and its a great gun and I've had no issues with it. Currently have over 600 rounds of Sellier & Bellot FMJs and another 100 Speer Gold Dot JHP 124gr +P (the short barrel version btw) through it. Walther in general is known for high quality and very tight tolerances in their guns and the PPS is no exception. This is the reason some tell you to dry fire it 200 times. I simply cleaned the gun, grabbed 300 rounds and hit the range. The PPS is already smooth it loosens up a touch after a few hundred rounds.. mainly the trigger. I fully clean it after every range use with a bore-snake, 4 or 5 q-tips, Hoppe's #9 Solvent and a microfiber cloth. I don't use oil on any of my firearms, instead I use a product called Fluid Film on all metal surfaces and on the rails. Its a very easy and quick handgun to clean. Note: Don't bother removing teh backstrap once you decide which one you like as its not needed to break it down for cleaning.. regardless of what the manual says.

Mine came with a 7rd and 8rd mag and I currently have 1 6rd, 2 7rd and 2 8rd mags.. the 8rd being the most comfortable in my hand and its still concealable. The 6rd is also nice with the pinky tucked underneath. I personally found the bottom of the 7rd mags to dig into my pinky and quite uncomfortable however the wife favors the 7rd mag and dislikes both the 6 and 8. :) The 9mm has 6,7,8 round mags and the 40 has 5,6,7 round mags. I've fired both and preferred the 9mm for faster follow up shots. I've been reading of more and more people selling their 40s and buying the 9mm for this same reason.. plus the extra round.

All the 9mm issues were resolved quite sometime ago. From what I've read over on the waltherforums com the 40s still have a few issues popping up but those are rare now. Overall the 9mm seems to have less issues.

fdegree.. try the gun again but don't use your thumb for the mag release. Instead slide your index finger up safely off the trigger and your middle finger up to the release. While the middle finger then presses down your opposite hand can be ready to insert a new mag and continue firing. It *is* a practice thing but I've shown a few people this way and they seem to like it. I agree that its not a thumb release! :)

We'll be buying a matching 9mm next year for the wife as well.

Glock 19 in a Minotaur Mtac holster or a Ruger SR9c in a Crossbreed supertuck.  Because I like the feel of these two guns the best and they are very accurate.  The holsters are the most comfortable to me with that particular gun.

Wow, we sure are bringing back an older thread with this one.

Millennium Pro PT111 (9mm) in a Crossbreed Supertuck most days. When I can dress around it I sometimes carry a Glock 21sf (.45) in a Fobus paddle holster.

Since I made this post I have upgraded to a Ruger SR40c (fits in all my Taurus Millennium holsters) and my Glock now rides in a Safariland ALS.

Wow, lots of great carry ideas here. I think we all keep the holster makers in business without a doubt, as it seems that each of us has at least 2 holster/carry options depending on firearm and dress.

Ok, so I'll just add mine here too. I carry a .38 +P J-Frame in warmer weather usually in a DeSantis high-ride nylon/kydex OWB. This one is the quick detach type with the snaps that comes off of the belt quickly. In the Winter I will carry the .357 2" Rhino in the leather pancake that came with the revolver (not a bad leather holster for something that came with the gun) If I go somewhere that I'm not able to leave my jacket on, I'll use a chest-band type holster (left hand cross-draw) either the J-Frame or the Rhino fit in it but I usually carry the J-Frame in it simply because it is lighter than the Rhino. About the only thing I've found that I don't like in terms of holsters is IWB, they just didn't work for me. The Rhino comes with half-moon clips that I've not figured out how to carry a spare 6 in a comfortable manner yet. For the J-Frame I have speed strips that just drop in a front pocket.

XDm 9mm 3.8" (full 19 rounds) in a Foxx Hybrid Holster, though I am going to order a Comp tac (either hybrid IWB or Appendix, or both)
I considered a XDm Compact but I liked the idea of the 19+1 rounds.  9mm Speer Gold Dot JHP (or Hornandy Critical Duty) as it is accurate and I can control the recoil pretty well even in +p.

SW M&P40C in a White Hat IWB hybrid with gun belt.  For when I'm just running around a Ruger LCP380 in a Desantis Nemesis.  Both combo's are very comfortable.  I'm finding the LCP to be great for the summer.  I can't find any shorts/pants I can't carry the little gun in.

Being as I've had my CCDW now for a month and I've tried a few items now...

My main daily setup includes my Classic Walther PPQ 9mm (paddle mag release) with MeProLight night sights, 15-rnd mag, plus one in the pipe. Usually 1 15-rnd or extended 17-rnd spare mag in a pouch as well. The PPQ is carried at about 3 o'clock in a Comp-Tac MTAC IWB leather/Kydex holster. A Comp-Tac 1.5" double layer gun belt is used which includes an internal strip of Kydex for extra stiffness. Completing the setup is a nice Kershaw Speedsafe Ken Onion knife that's (Ouch!) sharp as all get out.

I've been very happy with this setup and don't find it hard to keep concealed nor do I find it that heavy. The PPQ is my favorite handgun to shoot and I shoot best with it. It does take slightly more diligence and safety awareness since it is fully cocked with no external safeties or de-cocking options. Because of these reason, the exceptionally smooth 4.5lbs trigger and the .08" quick reset a lot of people shy away from it as a carry option.

I also have a Walther PPS 9mm with 6,7,8 round mags. This is added to the setup by simply changing out the Kydex shell of the MTAC. Additional shells for other guns cost $35 bucks so its easier on the wallet then buying entire new holsters for each firearm.

For OWB I like my Ruger SP101 .357mag, 2.5" snub with its bobbed hammer in a Galco Belt slide holster. It has Hogue grips added and HKS speed-loaders for extra rounds.

Currently tossing the idea of the Ruger LCP .380 (like darn near everyone has) for a small pocket pistol as a backup or simply for that quick trip to Rona's for a pizza or other short out and back trip.

I finally settled the other day on SW M&P Shield. Love it so far. Only shot 50+ rounds at this point! Thin single stack 9mm. Very light and comfortable.

I also carry the S&W M&P Shield. Very nice little pistol, smooth operation, and and no issues since purchased last year. Shot close to 500 rounds through it so far and no jams, or issues.
I especially like the way the trigger works.

Summertime, a diamond back 380 or DB380, just like a micro-glock, love that thing, 6+1 and carry it loaded, I've heard "that's nuts", specially since the no safety, but still to this day, no accidental discharges, that one I carry it with a blackhawk IWB and do it apendix.
Once the weather cools down and more clothing is needed, a ruger LC9, 7+1 and carry that one loaded as well, I guess my point is, when you might need to take it out, there might not be time to rack it, that one with just a side clip on my side, pretty comfy.

Carrying a Sig P938 with 7+1 mag in a Crossbreed Mini-Tuck holster.  Under a pound, but shoots much "bigger".  Really enjoying this little piece.

HK P30 LEM in a Remora.  This holster is very stable and comfortable.  I prefer it over my leather and kydex and it is as convenient as a pocket holster for quick trips and comfortable for all day carry, as well.
