was given a nice 45 many years ago, what is the best way, or is it necessary to register it in my name in order to carry it?

Delaware has no type of gun registration, so you would be fine.
Honey I swear I've had that gun for years!

You don't need to register it to keep it at home, or to carry it openly (except in Dover), but you need a permit to carry it concealed.
