While I have been a staunch defender of Taurus it looks like I may have to change my views. My Taurus MilPro PT111 seemed to defy critics for several years as it seemed to work flawlessly with over 1000 rounds through it. It developed a fatal flaw, it would drop magazines while firing. I sent it to Taurus and they returned it saying it was fixed. They said the slide had broken and they replaced it with a "new" one. Odd how this "new" one seemed to have what looked like holster wear of a couple of the edges. Anyway, I took it to the range today and the magazine dropped again on just the 3rd round. It dropped two more times by the time I finished my second magazine. While Taurus guarantees the firearm for life I do not feel it is worth the cost of shipping to send it back because after this I will never fully trust it again and I will not carry a firearm I cannot trust.

I would request they pay S&H

I am beginning to come around to your way of thinking, Hawkeye.
Considering the accuracy issue we talked about in previous posts, and this magazine problem, has me wanting to get rid of my PT111. It's unfortunate, because it is very comfortable, light and easy to conceal.
Anybody want to buy it...it's the Titanium model? [sarcasm] Very rare and quite valuable [sarcasm]

If I'm carrying a revolver, it's a Smith & Wesson.
If I'm carrying a semi-auto, it's a Glock.
I'm a terrible pessimist. I trust nothing & nobody... but I trust my Glocks, and I trust my J-frames.
-
maybe thats why the only hand gun that is avail to buy is Taurus

I have the same. My S&W 642 is my primary CCW for now and my Glock 21sf is for when I OC. I am looking at the possibility of getting a Ruger. My wife and daughter have the SR9c and my son-in-law has the SR40c. I am currently leaning towards the 40.
-
As you may be able to tell I have a SR9, Duh. I love it. I have no problem carrying concealed, although the SR9C is smaller it also has less capacity. The SR9 holds 18 rounds, while the SR9C holds only 11. Same goes for the 40 cal. series. I got my IWB holster from www.theholsterstore.com
The Deep Comfort IWB is what I carry all day everyday. Love it. Only 4 days to get it, and it is made in Florida and stocked.

Yep, gonna give that a try and see how it works.
-
Taurus e-mailed me a FedEx label today so I can send it back for repair. We'll see how it works.

I know I'm reviving an old thread, but thought I would let you know I replaced my PT111 with a Glock 26. I haven't fired it yet...maybe after I get the magazine extensions so my pinkie will be on the grip.
-
i don't see the point of the grip extension on the 26. It makes the grip as long as a 19. At that point, I'd rather carry my 19 for the 5 extra rounds ???
-
fdegree, excellent choice on the G26. Congratulations! Definitely get the extension (+0), very well designed, doesn't add a bit to the size of the gun.

Thanks...
Do you recommend one manufacturer over another?
Pierce...Scherer...Glock...etc.

I have pierce +0, two thumbs up. I don't have experience with other manufacturers. The desgin is really nice, the bottom is the same length as the regular magazine then it raises towards inside and out of the gun so you can place your finger. The place where it raises, as I said, goes toward inside and out so it has no affect on the overall length of the stock as far as concealment is concerned.

You are welcome. You will love this gun, another thing I like about it is the short barrel which allows me to carry very easily at 2 o'clock or in my pocket.
BTW, sorry for the hijacking here Hawkeye.

Received my MilPro back from Taurus yesterday. After replacing the slide the first time, this time they said the magazine release was worn and the magazine release spring was weak and replaced both. Now I have an excuse to get in some range time to check it out. Hopefully I can regain my trust in this gun so that I can put it back into the rotation.
-
I can see how this might solve the mag dropping problem...I hope it works out for you.
What about the accuracy problem we both were experiencing...has that been resolved?

When they changed the slide the first time it was in the shop the shot groupings came up so a little tinkering with the side to side adjustments of the sites might fix it. I will report back after I take it to the range.

Took my MilPro to the range today after getting it back for the second time. I put about 100 rounds through it and it held up well. I still need a couple hundred more rounds through it before I will put back into my carry rotation. I do not know if it was me or the gun but it seemed to fire truer to the point of aim with the heavier rounds (147 grain vs 115 & 124 grain).
-
That's good to hear, though unfortunate you had to go through the whole warranty process. I found heavier rounds helped with the accuracy too, but if memory serves, 124 gr. was the heaviest Taurus recommends for that gun...though I could be wrong. I don't have the owners manual on hand since I got rid of mine.
I'm not knocking the decision to keep yours...it is a nice feeling and easy to conceal gun. I hope it continues to work for you.
That being said...
...for me, the Glock 26 accuracy is much better than the Taurus, with cheap WalMart ammo that is only 115 gr. I was able to keep 90% of the shots within a 6" diameter, at about 25 yards...not the greatest, but now I know most of the accuracy issues, for me, seem to be due to the gun. I was lucky if 10% of the shots from the Taurus would hit within a 6" diameter, at 10 yards with the Taurus.
I hope your Taurus continues to perform well...

You are correct. They also do not recommend +p or +p+. The vast majority of rounds I fired through my MilPro were the WWB 115 grain variety as they are an inexpensive target round. My preferred SD round for this gun is the 124 grain Federal Hyda Shok (not +P). I had been experimenting with the 147 grains after reading on one of the Taurus forums how others were using the heavier rounds in their PT111's and had experiences no problems.
My new Ruger SR40c on the other hand has no such limitations on ammunition. The manual (same manual for the SR9c also) states:
No 9mm Parabellum or .40 S&W ammunition manufactured in accordance with NATO, U.S., SAAMI, or CIP standards is known to be beyond the design limits or known not to function in these pistols.
