Going to a local bar tonight for dinner with friends (I won't be drinking).... Afterwards we might end up at their place in MD... What should I do with my firearm?

Just lock incase?
Unload and lock incase with ammo in another location?
Take gun apart unload and lock pieces in case.. so I'm actually transporting gun pieces lol.

I drive a wagon so their is no separate trunk.

If I'm going out and I think there's any possibility of ending up in the Peoples Republic of Maryland, I leave my sidearm home in the safe or I don't go. Better safe than sorry. >:(

Me too. I am going to NJ tomorrow and will be leaving the gun at home. Maybe someday these states will come to their senses.

Here's another vote for "don't be armed if you're going to Maryland or NJ."
If you are stopped with a firearm in either state, unless (and maybe even if) you are demonstrably Just Passing Through, you are well and truly f***ed. Don't take the chance.

Ditto.  Leave at home.  Taking it apart means nothing.  Don't risk it.
This goes for Maryland, New Jersey or Pennsylvania (unless you have a license from ANY state)

In each of these states you may not have a firearm in your vehicle with some exceptions that going out for the evening does not cover.

The wife and I used to travel in MD a lot, and have stopped.  I have written letters to the different businesses and hotels etc we used to visit and told them why we no longer visit.  Probably doesn't help to change anything but I feel better.

Born and raised in Maryland, but have lived in Delaware for 50 years, so I have reason to go back to MD. every once in a while to visit friends and relatives. If I have to go I leave my guns at home locked up. As I said, I only go there for a visit, I don't want to be held there for any reason, especially carrying.

I say play safe and leave it at home. I avoid going into MD, and NJ, by all means necessary. On the rare circumstances I need to go there I leave the gun at home.

Good idea that.  Makes you feel good, but if enough do it might make a difference.

Living in little Delaware means crossing state lines a lot.  If businesses started to get hundreds of these letters, they might put some pressure.

I'm not sure, but getting caught carrying illegally in another state(usually a felony) could be grounds for losing your permit in Delaware.

I think retaining your DE permit would be the least of your worries if caught illegally carrying in another state.  :D

To be fair to the OP, he wasn't proposing to carry illegally.
He was going to comply with Federal law by locking his unloaded firearm in a case with the ammunition in a separate container.
The fact that Maryland and New Jersey, among other states, routinely violate people's rights does not make the OP careless. It makes MD & NJ a bunch of screaming d******bags.

OP and everyone else need to remember that the federal FOPA exemption only allows unloaded cased carry THROUGH a state.  The journey must begin AND end in a state where it is legal to transport in that manner.

Example: A Delaware resident on his way to Maine may legally carry in vehicle through New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts even though it would be unlawful in those states to pass through with a handgun. But because such carry is legal in Maine and Delaware there is protection under the FOPA

Remember too some places such as New York City consider this an "affirmative defense" meaning you will be arrested and jailed but can use this in your defense at trial. Not sure if this still happens but when the FOPA was first passed in 1986, people were still being arrested in these types of jurisdictions.

The OP destination was Maryland and consequently this type of carry would NOT be protected.
