I do like the .45acp but the .40 s&w is getting there.

I have to go with the 45 acp however you cant dismiss the 357 Sig with over 1400 fps.

I am going to stir up some controversy with this.  Since it is ball ammunition we are talking about, everything except the .38 will overpenetrate and you have the danger of going through your subject and endangering others.  You have to look at what your objective is.  You want to stop the threat causing as little collateral damage as possible.  The NYPD stopped using 9mm ball ammo years ago for this exact reason.  I know a lot of you will disagree but I like provoking a good discussion.  JHP's would be a whole other topic.  ;D

I guess in theory a .45 would be the best choice. Slower speed and heavier bullet would limit over penetration. and as far as barrel length I would say use a 4" barrel since most semi's use a 4" or close to a 4" barrel.
