Title: John Dickinson Plantation
Post by: JonathanG on June 28, 2016, 01:04:48 PM
Does anyone know if this is a gun free zone? I haven't had much luck googling information on it.

I can't say for sure, but since its owned by the State of Delaware I would treat it like a State park.

It isn't a state park and it isn't administered by the same agencies that administer public hunting grounds or state parks. I've had no luck figuring out where the statutes lie, in the Delaware code, that prohibit carrying in State of Delaware buildings.

"The John Dickinson House, generally known as Poplar Hall, is located on the John Dickinson Plantation in Dover, a property owned by the State of Delaware ..."

I'd say it would be a State of Delaware Historical site. No gun zone.

Jonathan,

I had asked this question a few months ago (incorrectly spelling Dickinson, so it wouldn't have come-up if you searched, sorry).  That thread is here http://deccw.com/index.php?topic=4214.0 (http://deccw.com/index.php?topic=4214.0)

I also never found a definitive answer to this question.  For what it's worth, the State Division of Historic & Cultural Affairs website gives the history which includes: " In 1952, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Delaware purchased the mansion with 12 acres of land for $25,000. They presented the site to the State in Constitution Day ceremonies that year."  See http://history.delaware.gov/museums/jdp/jdp_history.shtml (http://history.delaware.gov/museums/jdp/jdp_history.shtml)

So, I took that to mean it's state property, but never found any authority saying it was a "state building."  Ultimately, I applied Sturm's logic and opted not to carry.

I did the same. I took my mother in law and my four year old son to the plantation this past week. On a similar note, does anyone know where the section in the Delaware Code is that deals with the State prohibiting firearms in their buildings?
