Title: I get it, But...
Post by: FreakShow on August 10, 2016, 07:32:20 PM
I get it that people want to carry something small as to not be seen when concealed. But i'm by no means a small guy, if i have something under my shirt, it's going to leave am inpression. But i'm not going to carry a huge cannon, but i'm gonna keep something on me that will knock them down and keep them down. so if it sticks out a bit, well whatever. I'm more concerned with my own protection than someone staring at me. Thoughts, comments, suggestions please.

Only you can decide what you will carry and how. I agree that absolute concealment might not be wise.  You need to be able to react very quick. There have been and always will be debates about caliber. Not going to get into that. It's a personal choice.

Just like most things in life, carry will be a compromise size, power, concealment etc.

Dress is one thing that seems to be overlooked.  Need to have your dress conform to your carry style

That style may vary on the type of gun you carry.

I I have found that I like OWB. (Outside the waist band) at about 3:30.  I am probably in the minority as it seems IWB or appendix carry is most preferred.

You can get advice and experiment, but you and you alone must decide what is best for you.

As for "printing", unless it is highly obvious (1911 under a wet t-shirt) I wouldn't worry as almost no one will notice the bulge and precious few will know it's a gun.

Me?  I OWB under loose non tucking shirts.

Keep in mind that the objective, when necessary, is a well-placed pair.  Find what fits your hand well, that you are comfortable with recoil, that you can present quickly and is comfortable enough to wear nearly all of your upright hours.  Visibility is down the list

I've always carried a full size gun.  Currently F&N 45 @15+1.

I prefer, IWB VS OWB.  If you are larger and carry OWB when you
sit you grow a WING on one side.  Fun with a chair with arms...
IWB keeps it close to your body.

Delaware does not have a law against printing, so dont worry about that.
Plus, the pubic is CLUELESS as to what's going on around them.

When I took my class at the beginning of the year Kirk Marino was the instructor. He is not a small guy either. He carries a full size 1911 OWB. You really couldn't tell. He wears cotton button up shirts with a collar and cargo shorts.

I on the other had could never get away with that. I am tall and fairly thin (My wife says I have noassatall disease). But AIWB works best for me.

It always comes down to what works for you.  Inside/outside, cant, location, and even the weapon itself -- it's often a matter of trial-and-error, and personal preference.  You may not need to resort to stuffing a mouse gun into your crotch, but you also may not be able to pull off an S&W 500 -- even if it is a snubby!  Of course, when you're just starting out -- even a P3AT will feel like that 500.

Unfortunately, even seeing something like a holster in person doesn't answer your questions -- as you can't tell how things are going to ride.  Suddenly, lavatory stalls, car seats, theater seats, doorways, jackets, and many other items, become something that you will frequently encounter -- and no longer uneventfully.

And you may, perhaps unfortunately, eventually determine that the very weapon that you are carrying does not work for you and your situation.  But you should first work with what you have, and then go from there.  I've got stuff from OWB, IWB, pocket, shoulder, ankle, and off-body carry.  Most of it is scattered around the house, and a bunch of it has never even been used outside of trying it out inside of the house.

Understand the issue. Agree with commenter above that small amount of printing will not likely be noticed by 99% of people. I'm average build, 5'8", 175 and I carry IWB Glock 19 or sit P229 in Fall, winter, spring under pull over sweatshirt or regular no tuck shirt. In summer it's a pocket carry single stack 9.  Even if it prints a little, most people will think wallet in front pocket.  Also agree with other commenter that there are times when u do have to dress around the weapon, like maybe size larger slacks for IWB holster but hey, just carry a bigger weapon and you'll grow into them.

It's great that Delaware has no laws against printing or accidentally flashing your concealed firearm, say pumping gas and the wind blows open your jacket. Many states do and you can be charged in either account.

Radnor is absolutely correct in the public is clueless. When I started carrying I was all worried it might show and that even with a t-shirt, sweatshirt and full length trench coat secured and tied around me with a cloak around that, everyone around could SEE the firearm I had.  ;D

One could likely go about their business today with a full sized 1911 under a wet white t-shirt and no one would notice.

99% of the time I wear a double stack Classic Walther PPQ with 16 rounds. Usually with a light t-shirt pulled over and the world goes on with their business without a clue.

I'm 6'3" around 185 and I carry a Glock 43 IWB Alien Gear Cloak 3.0 holster at the 4:30 position and this works for me what works for me may work for you and it might not. I personally hate appendix carry its not comfortable

i don't have enough room in between me and my jeans to have a holster on the inside

IWB requires that either the trousers be a size larger in the waist or 'me' to become a size smaller in the waist. (Pun alert) Shooter's choice!  :)

I was lucky and just lost a lot of weight before carrying so my wardrobe remained functional.

yeah, i'm just not hip on the whole holster idea, especially these days cops are a little more jumppy as are people in general. i'm more comfortable going with the tactical belly band that has a place for the gun and two extra magezines

I conceal a Glock 29 and a spare mag in plain sight with a Safepacker.
My son calls it "the colostomy bag," but at my age maybe that's appropriate  ;D ... and I've passed through all sorts of security with it on.

In May of this year I stared carrying my G19 or G17 (along with a spare G17 mag) in a Maxpedition Narrow Look Bag. This is a well designed CCW bag and it actually looks like a man purse. Hey at age 74 I can use whatever works for me and in the summer this bag works for me. I also at times use a Roma fanny pack. During the summer these items work for me. I was asked one time what I had in the bag. I responded with,"Wallet, cell phone, reading glasses and "items to keep me healthy." I can also carry my Kindle in it.

Well  guys man bags may have gone out years ago but I am old school.  I do not give a @@@@ what people think or that I fit in with current trends.  Freak, when I was younger I probably would have said what you did. My friend please remember this. Things change when you get older. All I know is that if I have to take care of business during the summer I have the means to do it.

Guy man bags are handy for old guys. When something falls off, you can put it in the man bag. Don't litter.

I'm telling you I never thought I'd carry a bag either.. Until I had a kid at age 40. As the primary parent the little guy was with me 99% of the time and I of course had to have a baby bag. We did a lot of traveling and if I was gonna have to carry around a baby bag it was gonna be a manly baby bag!  ;D

What's more manly then a WWII utility bag! Hence the Tilley Intrepid Bag (http://www.tilley.com/us_en/men/essentials/bags/ad04-intrepid-bag-iv-8917.html).. Made proudly in Canada I might add! While he is now 6yo we still use the bag quite a bit and I've found myself heading out on my own for afternoon hiking and whatnot with it to carry asserted gear such as camera lenses, etc. Incredibly durable, good looking and should last me my lifetime or whenever he gets old enough I'll give it to him.

I have a couple of 5.11 PUSH Packs, which occasionally have been used to carry a weapon off-body.  A few times I have been asked to open it for inspection when leaving a store, to which I ask if they inspect all of the purses carried by women -- and simply walk by them.  One time I knew that the item on top was a firearm, so I gladly opened it up, after which the girl looked up at me and said "okay."

Also, having a bag like that is really good for when you have to run one of those errands where you know that you won't be exiting the vehicle, such as driving someone back to their house when you're wearing sweatpants or whatever -- but are still paranoid to leave the house without a weapon ( ::), hey, that's me!).

We now live in a time when a lot of folks simply jam their credit card and ID into their pockets, women carry wallets instead of purses, and men carry backpacks -- so a dude carrying any sort of bag isn't really that odd.  I don't understand the backpack thing, really, but...

Plus, if someone dared question why you carry a bag, you only need to respond that you self-identity as a female, and then the PC-Police are required to come stomp the questioner into submission!

I also had a 5.11 Push Pack but it was a bit bulky and it just did not work for me. I do however have a question for Freak. Regarding this thing you have about bags and you certainly have the right for your opinion. My question is this. Do you have a question about your man hood or what people may think?

I don't give a rats a** about what people think of me. i'm not the guy who has to take a million selfies anfd post them on facebook for everone's approval. I am the way i am, take it or leave it. it's not a question of manhood, if you feel the need to carry your stuff in a bag, by all means that your right, but it's not for me.

Well I am glad we got this straightened out. When it comes to concealed carry everyone should pick a system that works for them. Hey, all the best to you and be safe out there.

i have to admitt, i am new to the world of guns, I have shot a few in the past, have hunted when i was a kid, but never thought about being someone who carried one. this is all new to me. But i'm not going to judge anyone for how they live their lives. that is for them to decide. My whole idea of this thread is, if i wear something under a shirt, it will still stick out someewhat, and i'm ok with that because i'm just trying to protect myself, not going to be a hero. i just want to be able to go home everyday like everyone else.
