Range Officer 9mm, really fun.  I have not shot a pistol that I have enjoyed  more than a full size,  all steel,  1911 in 9mm.

looked at one of those too. like it but i think i want more ammo. i like the idea of a safety, and the love the safety in the dove tail on the XDM, plus the 19 rounds is awesome. there supposed to be a gun show coming up in new castle on the 3rd weekend of October. gonna put as many guns in my hands as i can, then i'll make a decision of what i want before heading to Federal Firearm.

Although a 19 round mag is nice for the range, you probably won't need it for self defense when out and about. Not many of us will encounter 5 bad guys wielding AK-47s and screaming "allahu akbar". There is nothing wrong with a single stack hand gun. You are more prepared if you carry a second mag in case of failure.

oh yeah, i'll have more than one mag on me. been watching the news a lot. people are being shot at the malls. did you see that kid walk in with what looked like a shot gun., times are crazy right now.. my wife and i jest left a mall then saw that on the news. the world has really gone to crap

Try a Ruger SR9. It has adjustable grip and a safety that can be used righ or left handed. Comes with (2) 17+1 magazines and a speed loader. They also make a SR9C smaller model, but only holds half the ammo, and seems to have more kick than the big brother SR9.

Checkout the Walther P99 or it's smaller P99c AS. I love my PPQs and PPSs but lately have been thinking of the P99c AS as I'm now mingling in a new situation where I want a slightly smaller profile but larger then the PPS.

Yeah I tout Walther's  ;D They are an amazing company who build a fantastic firearm. The PPS for its size is one of the most accurate handguns out there. The PPQ has the best stock trigger on the market. The P99 handguns have a pretty neat trigger system that allows for carrying in a number of trigger readiness conditions.

There's nothing wrong with having more ammo, as there is no way to tell what one may encounter out there on the streets.  It's simply better to have rounds left over, than it is to be -- dead.

watched a bunch of video's before watching the debate. leaning more towards the XDM 5.25 9mm. I like the sights, the 19 round mags and the ambi mag release because i'm a lefty. although it's 29 ounces without a mag, i don't think i'm gonna find a lighter gun unless i go with a compact version.

Is this for the range and/or home defense or for carry? Man you don't need anything that size for carry! ;D I mean its not impossible, I've carried a full sized 5" 1911 a few times but look at 4" length barrels instead. Lighter, shorter, being shorter means easier and less likely to have draw issues, easier and more comfortable to carry iwb, etc. It'll be just as accurate and still provide that 15-17 round capacity.

We were out last night up in Christiana Mall so stopped into Cabela's. They had a good selection of Walther's including the P99, P99c (AS model), PPQ, PPS and CCP (great women's gun with an easily rackable top slide). Priced more then Chris of course but everything in stock to manhandle before ordering through Chris.  ;D

Being a Lefty I'd highly suggest getting your hands on a P99 AS (or the Classic M1 PPQ) and feel their grip and use its ambidextrous paddle mag release built into the lower trigger guard. The PPQ additionally, has a fully ambidextrous slide release on both sides that was also designed to properly chamber a round from the mag when slide is open. Many manufacturers don't recommend this since the slide isn't back all the way and a possible hangup is a risk.. not so with Walther. The PPQ has no slide safety but a trigger (Glock style if you will) safety and 2 internal safeties. I carry this and it's banged around all the time and as long as its holstered its not going to just go off. The P99 AS has a flush mounted decocker in the slide and an anti-stress trigger so you can chamber a round, hit the decocker yet still have a safe heavier 9lb trigger pull followed by a lighter 4.5lb pull. I prefer the PPQ and its trigger myself but also looking at the smaller P99C AS for a few situations.

The PPQ is 100% ambidextrous and I've practiced using it with each hand to draw, rack, clear, reload and fire. Thankful now also since I've injured my right arm and looking at a long healing period. The P99 has the ambidextrous paddle but not the slide release though not a deal stopper at all.

The PPQ comes in 2 versions the Classic with the paddle or the M2 with the button and both come in 9 or 40. The Classic paddle PPQ is harder to come by but still available.

If you were closer I'd offer to meet up so you can check out mine but I think you're fairly far south.

Lol, i've though about trying to carry my 1911, but it is a heavy gun, and i will most likely carry my SD9VE beings i can get 15 rounds in the clip. hell, i'm still on the fence of how i'm going to carry other than the OWB holster i bought. it's just i was at shooters choice over the weekend shooting my guns and i asked about a few and i put the xdm in my hand and it felt nice. my biggest problem is that i'm new to all this and i'm not thinking far enough ahead to know what to buy. i liked the xdm although it was long and a little front heavy, but never thought about how it would be to carry. i'm like a kid in a candy store, except the candy explodes. but what i do appreciate is all the advice.i do get it like you say, i need to put these other guns in my hands before i order one from Chris. Planing on going to the gun show so i can do that. So if anyone see's me, please come up and say hi, i'll be wearing a black tee shirt that says Freak Show on the front of it

edit forgot to mention that i am looking for just an alternative to the SD for something else to carry., i like the short barrel of the SD, just want something a little longer. i guess my thinking is why have two of the same.

what does the de- cocker button really do. watched it on a video, but it never really explained it's purpose. i like the looks of the PPQ M2 because of the longer grip. That it one of my biggest issues with guns is the grip. i'm a diabetic and have neuropathy  in both my hands, so i have grip issues and need a larger or longer grip to hold onto so as when the gun fires it doesn't fly out of my hand. that's why i didn't buy the M&P shield. although a nice gun i would have to keep the extended clip in it to keep it in my hand.

Pull the slide back and it's fully cocked with a shorter & lighter (about 4.5lbs) trigger pull. The decocker when pressed on the AS model takes it out to half cocked and also changes the trigger to a heavier 9Lb trigger with a longer pull on the first shot. Both the P99(c) AS are marked as such on the left side of the slide. Lots of people like the decocked mode with longer and heavier trigger pull on first shot for safety.

I figure my finger and a good holster is safety enough and prefer the trigger on the PPQ over the P99 trigger system. The PPQ is simple, light, short, crisp and smooth right out of the box. Every single review will go on about the PPQs fantastic stock trigger. The P99 has a trigger system where you can select from various trigger configurations you want all without taking things apart or using tools. It IS a nice simple system for those who prefer it.

Their is also a P99(c) QA which when decocked drops the striker fully and doesn't allow a shot to be fired until it's racked again. I haven't used or played with one of these myself as most people prefer the AS model over the QA model. Google a couple videos and you'll see the differences for yourself quick enough.

As for your hands I know the PPQ comes with 15 round mags but an extended 17+1 is also available which extends the grip a bit more if needed. The Classic paddle PPQ and P99 mags fit each other while the M2 takes a different mag style.

If you want a 1911 type, how about one by the inventor of both, Browning Hipower.  Yes, it is about the size of a full 1911, but a very nice gun.  Why not go see Chris, he has a lot of stock, and maybe one with your name on it.

As Adrenolin mentioned I too highly recommend the Walther P99 AS.  I have put 700+ rounds through mine and love it.  Once I get my license (submitted paperwork yesterday) it will be my EDC gun.  I'm sure I will take some heat for this but I personally like the P99 because I can chamber a round and decock the striker prior to holstering the weapon.  Of course the first round fired would be the full trigger length and pull weight which is about 9 pounds I think.  Follow-up shots then use the very short trigger travel distance and reduced weight of only 4.5 pounds.  This is exactly how I train at the range first round is decocked with 2 follow-up regular shots.  The other nice thing about the P99 is it has a very short trigger reset for the follow-up shots.

Maybe at some point after I have been carrying for a while I will get more comfortable with a round chambered and a lighter trigger pull at which point I will either stop decocking the P99 before holstering or possibly even start carrying my HK VP9 which is also one of my favorite guns.

Another possible option would be the Sig P320.  My friend recently purchased one from Chris and he loves it.  I also had an opportunity to rent a P320 recently and have to say the trigger feel and reset reminds me a lot of the P99.  The other nice thing about the P320 is being able to change out the caliber and or frame size without having to purchase through FFL (sorry Chris).  I plan at adding a P320 and possibly a FN FNX 45 to the mix at some point.

i already have a S&W SD9VE. I love it, but just want another as having something else to carry. Got the bug for guns and can always use nother. am leaning toward a Springfield XD mod 2 four inch service model. just like the way it felt in my hands, plus i like the idea of a safety and i like the one in the dovetail. plus i'm a lefty and it has an ambi mag release.

I've been using and carrying this Ruger SR9 for years. I have no problem concealing it. It is very accurate and balanced. It holds 17+1 rounds. If you want something smaller, I'd recommend the SR9C little brother version. It holds 6+1 I believe. But I still prefer the regular SR9. I       have 2/ 17 round mags and two 10 round mags. All together I can carry 55 rounds if need be.

Have you actually fired anything aside from that SD9VE? Of the Walthers, Rugers, CZs, S&Ws, SIGs and Glock (argh Yes I caved and bought one) the SD9VE and SW9VE have gotta be the most unimpressive plastic handguns I have owned... well after the Hi-Point JMP 45s that is. Those are just plain unwieldy.

If you like it that's all that counts and what I think certainly doesn't however what other handguns have you fired?

Good morning Freakshow,

Have you gone to Shooters Choice in Dover and looked at any of their used/new guns not to buy but at least to handle.
I'm not 100% sure on this but I think they let you fire their used handguns.
Just my thought maybe you'll find something that way or point you in the right direction.
I was looking at a Ruger LC9S at Shooters a couple years ago but after picking up the M&P Shield I loved the way that felt in my hands better then the Ruger and I went with the shield.
I may change EDC in the future but touching and feeling helped me out in that case.

Yup.. Shooters Choice usually has a decent selection of used handguns for rent. You do need to purchase their ammo to shoot with which is pretty much standard to keep people from firing off hand loads. Great way to try out a few to see what you like before buying and of course.. you don't have to buy from them...  ;D

My Ruger SR9c came with a standard 10 rd magazine  and a 17 rd extended mag. I paid $430 which at the time was a bargain. They still price out in the mid-$400 range. FederalFirearms may be able to find you one but GOG and Bud's are out of stock which I'm told is a fair indicator of availability.
I have fired both the full-sized and compact models and can say from my own experience that both are equally reliable and accurate.
