Title: What are your thoughts on .308, 300 blackout and 458 SOCOM?
Post by: coolwrld on April 22, 2017, 04:48:50 AM
So I currently already have an AR-15 (thanks Chris) and a SKS in my ensemble and would like to expand at some point.  While I have been primarily looking at .308s in an AR-10 configuration I have recently started researching 300 blackouts and 458 SOCOMs as well.  I know once you start getting up in to these calibers you are probably going a little beyond your standard home defense type scenario but I am definitely interested in getting something that provides a little more punch and better long range accuracy.  Having the SKS I'm already familiar to some degree with the potential of the .308/7.62 round generally but am interested in others opinions regarding that round as well as the 300 blackout and 458 SOCOM.

So not withstanding the cost differences related to the firearms themselves and the ridiculously expense 458 SOCOM rounds what are you opinions related to the pros and cons of each round?

If you want something better for long range id go .308, itll have the cheapest ammo too. I have a 300blk pistol i reload for. Its nice since i can make my own brass and shoot it pretty cheap. If supressors were legal here it would be a great round for that. Ive never messed with a 458 but it seems like it would be a great round to drop an animal at close range.

Personally, id rather own a 308 AR10 out of the 3

I would have to go .308 as well and I have been considering a Savage Axis II in .308 caliber.
You can also get it in other calibers as well and it has great reviews.
It comes equipped with a scope and adjustable trigger.
You can pick one up for around $400.00 - $450.00. - https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/90726/Firearms/Rifles/Savage/Savage+Actions/Savage+AXIS+II+XP+308+WIN+W%2FSCOPE (https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/90726/Firearms/Rifles/Savage/Savage+Actions/Savage+AXIS+II+XP+308+WIN+W%2FSCOPE)
I'm not sure if Federal Firearms carries them but I'm sure Chris can order you one.
It's not an AR platform but it can get you shooting in many calibers out of the box and for far less the cost.
The only negative review on the rifle I have seen was some people hated the synthetic stock it comes with.
I will be looking at purchasing this rifle at a later date when more $$$$ is available as I too want something with more punch and distance capability.
You can get it in 6 different calibers if you're not a fan of .308  ---  http://www.cabelas.com/product/SAVAGE-AXIS-II-XP-W-WEAVER-SCOPE-RIFLE/1849999.uts (http://www.cabelas.com/product/SAVAGE-AXIS-II-XP-W-WEAVER-SCOPE-RIFLE/1849999.uts)

Having owned an H&K 91 (7.62x54), the .308 will always be my choice. Now I have to go blot my eyes. All welling up on me.

I would also recommend the 308...ammo cost, distance etc...300 blackout/whisper is cool..shorter range, much shorter really intended for suppressor....458 is a beast...i have a couple..they kick hard but boy oh boy are they fun...would definitely want to reload as factory ammo is very pricey.......I think for all around blaster if you want a larger caliber, 308 is the one..
