Title: Firearms Banned in Sussex County Buildings
Post by: MarkB on October 31, 2017, 11:56:39 PM
The good news is that LEO's and Concealed Permit Holders are still allowed to carry in Sussex County Buildings.  This appears to be aimed at Open Carry.

Here is the text of the ordinance.  Look at Section 1,e,5.

Now, here's the kicker:  firearms were not allowed in the Sussex County Court buildings at the Square in Georgetown.  According to the read of this ordinance it appears that a CCW permit holder can now carry in those buildings.  I would ask first, though.

Many gument bldg.'s require you to go thru metal detectors so that will stop you.  They won't even allow a small pen knife in.

I agree, Bill.  However, the text of the new ordinance does allow a permitted person to carry in a county building.  The county still can stop anything else.  Evidently there is a state law that does not allow county governments to ban firearms without an ordinance.  Anything else can be banned just with a new regulation.  The text of this new ordinance does allow permitted people to carry in county buildings.  I do believe you will have to convince the officers at the entrance that you are allowed to carry.  This ordinance covers ALL county buildings including the libraries, satellite buildings and any building that is hosting a county event (for the duration of the event).

I had to go to the court house to get a divorce decree, they wouldn't let me in with anything more than my keys. I had to get a tiny lock box to shove all my crap in, then go in. I was on my bike so i had no car to put it in. Now if i couldn't go in with all my other stuff they are not going to let you walk in with a gun.

Was this before 10/31?  The ordinance took effect that day and you should have been allowed to carry your gun into the courthouse.  I believe the courthouse s a county building and not a state building.  However, they can restrict anything else.

I just called the Security Supervisor for Sussex County.   When you show your CCW permit at the check-in station you will be allowed to carry concealed onto the courthouse or any other building.  He also said that knives under a 3" blade length are allowed also.  The other things (cell phones) are still banned.

Hopefully, the officers at the station know the new ordinance.
