A proud Broward County gun owner is deciding to “be the change [he] wants to see in the world” — by giving up his AR-57.

Ben Dickmann, 40, posted photos of himself surrendering his assault weapon to Broward Sheriff’s officers on Facebook Friday, in the wake of the tragic Parkland, Fla. attack at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School, where 17 people were shot dead by gunman using an AR-15 rifle.

“I do not need this rifle,” Dickmann wrote. “No one without a law enforcement badge needs this rifle.”

The AR-57 is a semi-automatic rifle and a caliber variant of the AR-15.

“I could have easily sold this, but no person needs this,” Dickmann wrote.

“I will be the change I want to see in this world. If our lawmakers will continue to close their eyes and open their wallets, I will lead by example.”

The Milwaukee native said he was a highly-trained gun owner who’d been hunting since he was a child, but that he would just use other types of guns from now on.

Dickmann’s post has been shared over 100,000 times and he told NPR he never expected it to touch so many people.

“My whole goal was to inspire one friend on my Facebook to do the same thing. And maybe that friend would inspire one other person,” he said.

That may be good for him, but as for me, I'll be keeping mine and will keep up the fight to do so as stated in the US Constitution.

He just wants some fame is all .... "Hey everybody, LOOK AT ME!"  Look at how good I am.  He needs some validation for his ego.

Had nothing to do with the shootings: he couldn't afford the ammo.

I'm also a proud gun owner, but the phrase "........from my cold dead hands....", comes to mind.  I keep reminding people about the Second Amendment but all I get is blank stares.  They simply do not understand the consequences of what they want.

Let them read about the guns being taken from the Jews by Hitler and the 6 million of them that die as a result. Now the people of Israel are well armed, and won't make that mistake again.

Israel has terrible gun laws.  You can only have 1 gun and 50 rounds of ammo per year. You can only carry if you are a reservist or live in one of the settlement.

Here is a link to how it really works in Israel:

Unlike NJ & MD their definition of "good cause" or "justifiable need" includes the protection of your community.

No thanks.  While it is great that they have armed citizens to protect the community in Israel, these are draconian gun laws that Bloomberg, Shumer and Feinstein would love to inflict on us.

However, according to the author, Avrech, the Israeli response was to arm more citizens and teachers.  In my opinion, they still have a long way to go to properly protect their populace.  As has happened here, knives and vehicles are the next evil weapon of choice.
