Title: Maryland permit
Post by: seniorgeek on August 17, 2019, 08:18:55 PM
I sent in my paperwork for the Maryland "wear and carry" permit on Thursday.
I am very curious to see how the process moves forward.
One thing I found out, is that if you are a veteran you can submit your DD214 and you do not have to take the Maryland training course.
This cuts out one step in the process.
The people that I used for references said they will call me if/when they get a call from the MD PD.

I will update this thread as I get status updates if any.

Oh, I did not have a real unique or other special reason, so .....

I took a look at the MSP site, doesn't look possible for just a "common citizen" to obtain.

I also didn't see anything for "non-Residents", but perhaps I missed that.

Not something I'd be willing to try, as I do not want to be answering yes, to  the "have you ever been denied a permit" question, that appears on most states CCW applications.

Very curious to hear how things go for you, wish you the best of luck.

I just received a letter today saying the all my background checks came back negative.
Step 1 - I passed the background checks. I knew I would so no problem there.
Step 2 - I don't know but as I receive updates I will post them.

Don't forget to update us!

I am very curious as to how this ends for you, sorry to say I'm pretty sure it will end with a denial.

But, I hope you are able to prove me wrong.

Update 9-11-2019
Step 2 - My wife received a call from the MD State Police and they asked her the following questions:
MSP: How long have you been married?
Wife: 49 years
MSP: Has your husband ever been mean to you or children?
Wife: No, never
MSP: Does your husband do drugs or consume a large amount of alcohol?
Wife: Not since we have been married.
MSP: Anyone under the age of 18 living in your house?
Wife: no
MSP: Do you have a concealed carry permit?
Wife: Yes, DE, PA, UTAH.
MSP: Do you have a gun safe in the house?
Wife: Yes
MSP: Thank you for answering these questions.
Wife: How is the process going?
MSP: Just fine.
End of the phone conversation.

Update 9-19-2019

I had my interview with the MD State Police investigator by the name of Sarah Mastronardi.
The interview took place in Salisbury MD at the state police barracks.
The interview went well with her asking many questions.
General alcohol, drug, questions which I gave negative answers. No issues there.
Did I have a carry pistol, yes naturally since I hold multiple state permits.
Questions continued on why I want a MD permit which I gave her my answers. She approved.
She asked for multiple documents to be sent her which showed that I am in MD often for both business and pleasure.
Also, documents that showed I received income from work I do in MD. (I am a professional Tennis Official)
The interview lasted about an hour.

When I got home I emailed her all the requested documents.

-The wait continues.....

I assume MD does not have that language in their Constitution,  "...….shall not be infringed."  Or they simply ignore it, as the DE legislature would like to do.

Also, documents that showed I received income from work I do in MD.

This part seems to be key to getting a Maryland permit. The few people I know who were successful in obtaining their permit all had some form of business in the state that involved money. Preferably cash transactions.

10-1 update.

All my references have been called. I got a phone call today from each of them telling me that they received a call from the MD SP asking about my permit request.
They all told me that they gave very positive responses.

Ok, I am now 6 plus weeks into my application.
Any guesses as to when I will finally know? How about a poll?
The wait continues....

Since it is in MD, I would not take any bets in your favor, but it could happen..  Good Luck!!!

Maryland is known to add restrictions to their permit. They could grant him one, but restrict it to business travel only.

Lot of big egos on that site. Tolerable but requires a break now and again.

I'm glad to hear things are going alright, so far.

I certainly hope things work out in your favor, but I'd be lying if I said I still don't believe they will grant you it, but I do hope they do.

Best of luck to you and please continue to keep us informed.

I'm curious as to how things are going with this?

Have you gotten your permit?

I was turned down for my Maryland permit as most of you thought would happen.
I have an acquaintance who is a senior office in the Maryland State Patrol. He told me he would make sure it went through. I talked with him a couple of time during the process ans he said all was well.
When I was denied I emailed him to see what happened. All he said was sorry it should have went through.

So much for counting on a contact in the right place.

I would have been happy for you personally but this shows what a corrupt system they have if someone on the inside could help.

I remember the “old days” in Delaware when knowing a state trooper helped an acquaintance of mine get one.

Unfortunately for you now, you will have to answer in the affirmative that you have been denied a license in the past when making applications.

All of those permit mean squat if you can't carry outside of your home.  Write, call, bug, your politicians, not that it works in MD, but can't hurt.

I'm really sorry to hear that.

As has been said, the problem is that now you have to admit to having been denied a permit.

I hope that doesn't cause you any problems in the future.

Does Maryland have an appeals process? I don't know, but if they do, I certainly would
appeal. I would also want to know why your request was denied, just in case it is an issue
you could correct before reapplying. Please carry every day. You may choose to not defend
yourself, but you have already made that choice if you leave your weapon at home.
Stay Safe,
