Taurus PT92 disappointment
« on: December 06, 2011, 02:20:13 AM »
I was looking for a large frame auto with ambidextrous 3 position safety (I’m a southpaw)and after reading so much, I went for this pistol. The first one came in with a bent recoil spring guide. OK, it’s a fluke and I’ll get another. Second gun appeared perfect. Disassembled and cleaned before trying out. I never made it through a 50 box! The gun refused to fire after every 5 – 6 rounds. Several pulls and click, then another cock, and pull, and a fire. Very unsafe. I returned the Taurus to the dealer and they said, sorry we can’t exchange for another firearm, only return for repair. Dealer does not have a range so it couldn’t be ‘try before buy’. So we take the gun out back and they load it with hotter loads and got the same results. Dealer says, this is unacceptable and WE WILL RETURN IT AND DEAL WITH THE MANUFACTURER. Pick another and we’ll put the cost into the new. So I went for Beretta 92A1 and hopefully it’ll be 100%. Not intended for CCW, more for a nightstand piece.

Welcome to the forum. I am sure you will get better results with the Beretta. Just curious, if the dealer did not have a range then when they went out back with the hotter loads where did they fire?

I was given a Taurus PT92CS (stainless) as a gift from a friend when his Father died. I would never buy a Taurus, as I'm a Sig and HK guy (and soon Glock, from what I hear. Maybe that model 20??).
Anyway I only fired it once at the range. Shot 25 rounds of standard FMJ ammo with no issues. It's vintage 1992, but practically new. If I hear someone kick my door in at night, I'm reaching for the HK, not the Taurus.

Usually what you describe on 4-5 shoots, no bang, pull slide back and it loads correctly,   ?   am I describing it right?   My kid has that problem with My DE44   He gets limped wristed after a few rounds.

If slide does not go all way back,  it wont slam shut , and no bang...

I've never read anything good about Taurus semi-auto firearms.

We do have an eight-shot Taurus 608 revolver that has been perfectly reliable, but based on the horror stories I've read we would never trust one of their pistols.

Hawkeye: they fired into the ground between some buildings, not a city setting.
TwistedKarma: Pretty much so, rack a fresh load and still no fire.

Got the Beretta 92A1 (J9A9F10) today, will try her out tomorrow.

Wish the safety/decocker was on the frame in stead of the slide but I'll get used to it. Already changed the eject button to left, now I have to train my right to do what my left has been doing! Got plenty of rounds so I imagine the learning curve will be short  ;D

Now for a Hogue grip!

Taurus autos = JPJ   (just plain junk)

Taurus handguns get mixed reviews and I understand that in many cases the reputation is deserved, however, I can say that I have not had any problems with my PT111. ;D

Great everything end up well and you were able to exchange. My first semi-auto was a Taurus, also had a Taurus revolver, would pass on any Taurus today.

I was anti Taurus for years when they first started  appearing... BUT I have really changed opinion of em... love my model 82.. and never had a hipcup with the 92 stainless, just wish the mags were interchangeable with the Beretta...

I have a Taurus PT840, had it for about 3 years now. I have put about 1500 rounds through it without any issues. ;D

Buy American. Ruger is made in Prescot Az. I tried Glock, Taurus, and others. I bought Ruger. Not problems in 3 years. Love it. Why pay rate of exchange for foriegn guns and parts.
