Delaware Sports Lottery
« on: March 29, 2009, 01:55:46 PM »
What does everyone think about Delaware creating a sports lottery? I like the idea but don't know that it will make as much money as the governor thinks.I like how Markell is standing up to the NFL and especially the NCAA.
In the middle of March Madness and the NCAA is insisting that they are against gambling. All those brackets that are out there and they really think no money os being wagered?? ???

There is much more to this bill than just sport's betting. There are three more casinos in this bill. You can bet that those who work for the three main casinos in DE will be facing layoffs. In return, manty jobs will be created but at which cost?
The bottom line is no more jobs will be created than lost. And these new casinos will NOT bring in any new business due to DE being so small.
The current casinos (in this bill) are facing a 17% increase in taxes which will lead to involuntary layoffs (more than what already happened). The other casinos will be built with no racing, which will lead to the end of horse racing in DE (leading to more layoffs). IT WILL HAPPEN. MANY farms and others in the horse racing industry will be forced to other states creating more jobs in other states as well as selling off farm to developement in DE. We kind of have too much of that now!

I and someone else here will be laid off within a couple of years at max. All because horse racing is directly tied to these casinos.

As usual, I am NOT being rude when I say this but READ THE BILL! Educate yourselves before you speak on issues. I know it sounds harsh and I am truly sorry for that but seriously, we need to read between the lines on ALL issues.
Sport's gambling is a must in DE. But in this case, the cost/benefit is too much. We should call our Reps and FORCE them to vote NO!!!

I understand the layoff issue Taurus but would real casinos also not need to hire people such as yourself for fire and EMT services? And would DP and the other current racinos not also include the sports lottery? And the places woudl also have a jump start in the business since they already have a property and other ammentities to draw the customer base back. Also lets face it , horseracing in Delaware has been on a steady decline for several years now and the slot business has been declining also. If and whem Maryland starts slots I think Delaware will see an even bigger bite taken out of the racinos. We might as well be proactive and get going on this now while we still have gamblers coming to this state.

IMO Its like this you have X number bettors coming to Delaware right now which is down from other years, Add more casinos and those people are going to spread out which is going to hurt the bottom line and in the end too many casinos and not enough people. Look what happened to the electronics Stores. You had Best Buy, Circuit City, Tweeter and all the Big Box Stores. Tweeter and Circuit City couldn't compete and now they are gone. Same thing that will happen with the Casinos.

I think before they start to expand the number of casinos they have, they should get rid of the electronic feces boxes they have "digital dealers" and put some real tables in.  There is a higher profit for the house on tables, yet they want to expand etc.  As for the sports gambling, do they honestly think they're keeping it out of DE by not legalizing it or organizing it?  They're just missing out on some moolah!

Let me say that I'm not in favor of any body losing their jobs. The way I see it is that if they expand the gambling in the state that can help those existing places. Imagine how much bigger DP or Dover downs could get with expanding gambling. As far as adding upto 10 new locations that can handle the sports betting I can't imagine those will all be full house casinos but more like an OTB that is a sports book. I know that they have been trying to get a casino on the riverfront, but again the three existing have a leg up becasue they are already running.

The problem lies here: People will lose their jobs. Only some of these people will gain 'casino' jobs. There's only one Casino that hires EMT/firefighters. That's De Park. The EMT's there would not be able to go to another casino and get a job because everything is contracted out. These (contracted) companies would not have hire anyone new due to everything being electronially monitored. All they do is call the volunteers (as many of us know).

Thousands of horse racing jobs would be lost. There is no solution for them other than find another place to race. Many of these jobs would be irreplaceable; i.e. The full-time mutuel tellers would be gone.
Tax revenue generated from these jobs would be a loss for Delaware. Mostly because these people have been at De Park a long time... (some for 50+ years).

I think sport's betting is generally a good idea for revenue purposes. BUT, many more would be brought in by table games - (AHEM - gunenvy) Just don't let me play next to you!
The biggest part of the problem is the new casinos. Eliminate that from the bill. We don't need any new casinos in Delaware. There's three already and De is too small.

We cant even keep Christiana Mall afloat with decent stores...  yet they want to bring in more and more casinos.  I'm still not understanding it. People aren't out spending scared money.  They're using it to pay bills, purchase basic needs, etc. When I found out we were spending millions on over passes along Rt 13/113, etc. I was mad.  But then I realized that while I still think these are things that could have waited until after the state economy was back on its feet, these projects are creating jobs which means a few less folks are collecting unemployment, etc.  My husband laughs and says, screw giving all these banks and automakers the bailout money, just give it to the American people (divide it up) and let us spend it!! Its the fastest way to stimulate the economy. While that's a great concept, I doubt it would work the way he thinks it would/should.

Gun Nut, thanks for the elaboration.  I used to work in Security at both DE Park and Dover Downs many moons ago.  Fun, but Im glad I'm away from there now.

But as for opening more and more casinos in Delaware (which someone might want to remind Markell is the 2nd SMALLEST STATE)..  I think it's going to end up being a wash.

Gun Nut.. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you buddy!!
