Storm Clouds On The Horizon

Posted: 19 Feb 2013 08:27 AM PST

It’s coming.

Things have been quiet in Delaware, and not much has been said about “assault weapons” and “high capacity magazines” and “universal background checks.”

But it’s coming.

New York passes and enacts the most draconian anti-firearms laws in the country, and Colorado follows by passing legislation that would drive Magpul out of the state, while firearms manufacturers are lining up to stop supplying local, state, and federal agencies that infringe on Second Amendment rights. All around Delaware, things are happening, and nothing is coming from Dover. Yet.

But it’s coming.

I met with Senator Venables last week, and confirmed with him that the storm clouds are indeed on the horizon. It’s been quiet because the state budget is the primary concern right now, but that will be done by the beginning of March. Once that happens, attention can turn to the next big thing on the mind of First State lawmakers – gun control. Or more accurately, rights control.

If you need any proof of exactly what is being planned, take a look at this resolution passed by the ‎14th RD Democratic Committee:

In Support of Legislation to Reduce Gun Violence in Delaware

WHEREAS, 32 people on average are murdered by guns every day in the United States; and

WHEREAS, there have been more than 70 mass shootings since the January 8, 2011 massacre in Tucson, Arizona where US Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford was critically wounded and nine others were killed, including nine-year Christina-Taylor Green; and

WHEREAS, seven (7) people have been shot to death in Delaware in the first six weeks of 2013; and

WHEREAS, numerous current polls indicate the majority of Americans, including gun owners, support a wide range of policies aimed at reducing gun violence; and

WHEREAS, we will not accept NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre’s belief that “the guys with the guns make the rules” (2009 Conservative Political Action Conference);

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the the 14th RD Democratic Committee charges the 147th General Assembly to pass legislation as proposed by Governor Jack Markell that would
• Require background checks for private firearm sales
• Require the reporting of lost and stolen firearms
• Ban the sale, manufacture, delivery and unlawful possession of large-capacity magazines
• Ban the manufacture, sale, delivery and unlawful possession of semi-automatic weapons
• Ban possession of a firearm within 300 feet of a school

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the 14th RD Democratic Committee shall send a copy of this resolution to the 62 members of the 147th Delaware General Assembly, Governor Jack Markell, Attorney General Beau Biden, U.S. Senator Tom Carper, U.S. Senator Chris Coons and U.S. Representative John Carney.

Endorsed by the 14th RD Democratic Committee on February 13, 2013

Exactly which of these five items will have an impact on crime?
