New 12 Gauge Suggestions
« on: February 28, 2013, 05:57:13 PM »
I am in the market for a new 12 gauge, was looking for some input on what some forum members suggest or like.  The one I have now is in great shape and fires fine, its just really old, I am 3rd generation owner of it.

if thats all your going to do with it, I would suggest a Remington 870 or Mossy 500 with a 28 inch barrel.  Can't go wrong with either.  I'm looking at new duck hunting gun myself and I think it's going to be the Stoeger m3500

I think I know what Joe will say: "Get a double barrel shotgun. Walk up to those clays and fire 2 blasts"!

But seriously, money is a factor. How much to you want to spend? And look at little farther down the road to decide what else you may want to do with it. That could change your decision. Also, if they throw doubles, you may want an autoloader. Just some things to consider.....

Bmel17 mentioned a Mossberg 500.  I've had a mossy for 30 years and found it to be very versatile.  The 500 is very inexpensive and may need some simple smithing to get it as tight as you like.  I'm good to go since I have the 500 with a slug barrel and a bird barrel.

My father in law wanted a shotgun for his house. I did the research for him and decided that the Mossberg 500 was for him. And I was so impressed that I got one for myself! We both love them.

I bought a used (1971) Remington 870 Wingmaster 12 ga at the Nur temple gun show years ago. Beautiful condition and the action still super smooth. Paid $300 for it. Haven't regretted it.

I owned a 870 Wingmaster and loved it. I also got a Beretta AL 390 and it was a pretty decent shotgun for skeet and trap shooting. I don't really do either a lot so I have sold them both, and got a Mossberg 590a1. If all you are going to use it for is sport shooting, but you want something for home defense I would suggest an 870 Rem., or a Mossberg 500.
