According to an article written by an LA detective, who compiled LA police shooting stastics, it takes (on average) 4-5 shots from a .45 to stop an attacker, and 5-6 shots from a 9mm.

Wouldn't that depend on where you hit your attacker? People have been killed with one shot from a small caliber pistol if it is a brain or heart shot.

I carry a 9mm myself with hollow points.

Those numbers seem so high for both calibers. I'm in my early 20's, 6'2" and about 230lbs and I feel like getting shot once with either would be a come to Jesus moment. I wonder if they are talking about 5-6 shots fired and 1-2 hit, or maybe every criminal in LA is Wolverine.

There are many variables to consider; range, type of bullet, amount of clothing, bullet entry location, etc.
So you would have to see all the statistics to make an accurate statement.

Page 2 shows a chart of common handgun calibers and their statistics...velocity - penetration - expansion.

There are a few 9mm rounds that exceed the penetration and overall expansion size of most .40 and .45 calibers. For example...the DoubleTap 124 Gr. Bonded JHP 9mm penetrated 15.0" and expanded by a factor of 1.97. This results in an expansion size of 0.697". For the .45 to equal that final expanded size, it would have to expand by a factor of 1.55...some did, but most did not. Same for the .40 - it would have to expand by a factor of 1.74 to equal that of this particular 9mm round...some did, but most did not. The .40's and .45's that did exceed the expansion of this 9mm, most did not have the same penetration.

DISCLAIMER -- I'm not a math wiz, so there may be some mistakes in my calculations

So, it would appear the average performance of the .40's and .45's does exceed that of the average 9mm, but there are a few 9mm rounds that outperform most .40's and .45's.

Remember, the report I cited said "on average", meaning all things considered, clothing, misses, etc. I read a story about a police officer and a large criminal, who both emptied .45 auto's into each other without misses, and both got away and survived.
