45 ACP Ball or Hollow Point in a 1911
« on: April 23, 2009, 12:57:01 AM »
Here's what I was thinking if you carry a 1911 what would you carry for a self defense round. We all know most 1911's are more reliable with ball ammo then hallow points. My other though is ball ammo (FMJ) is 230 grain where a lot of hollow points are around 135 to 140 grain some are larger but most the ones I've seen are a lower weight, I cant see the ball ammo over penetrating, In all reality I want penetration if I have to shoot through something I want to still incapacitate the other person. So what does everyone think. I'm thinking along the lines of mass and speed.

Take a look at this chart

http://www.handloads.com/misc/stoppingpower.asp?Caliber=18&Weight=All

It compares stopping power, penetration, one shot stops form actual shootings for the most popular loads. FMJ's seem to rate at the bottom.

I carry 200 gr hollow points in my defender and have never had a single misfeed with it. I wouldnt want FMJ for defense in any caliber especially the 45acp. From everything Ive seen and heard is they may overpenetrate even more so than some of the smaller calibers due to bullet weight.
Honey I swear I've had that gun for years!

I found Federal makes an expanding full metal jacket round, it seems to be well liked, just cant find it for sale anywhere.

for what its worth, ive fired fed. hydra shock 230 and fed/gold dot (same bullet) hst, through 3 gallons of water, a leather jacket and into a kevlar stop drop. far and away the hst opened like an octopus, the hydra shock collapsed. i know it aint perfect, but its perfect for me!!

they were fired from a sig p220, at 25 ft, and the leather jacket wrapped around the water jugs

I decided to try Pow'R Ball 165gr +P. Everything I 've read has been good about it and feeding seems to not be an issue.

I carry the Pow'R Ball in my  Tactical Pro II.  I have used them on the range to see if there would be any feed problems as well.  The Pow'R Balls cycled perfectly.
I found that if using an 8 round mag regular hollow points would fail to cycle and get stuck on the feed ramp.  I have not had that problem with the Pow'R ball ammo.

Thanks I do like the Pow R Ball and I don't find the +P to be too bad. And it fed perfectly.

I've not had any problems with hollow points in my Fusion CCO or my Rock Island Officer's model.

Carry -> HP
Shoot -> FMJ

And every so often will run the HP(s) through to renew the carry ammo.
