Should you happen to be speaking with anyone who brings up the "evil guns" issue in light of the Navy Yard shooting.
We need to "Change the Narrative" away from guns & toward the real cause of these events.
The perpetrators of these events are VERY determined. They plan carefully, often starting years before they act.
Even if all guns suddenly disappeared, they would simply find other ways to accomplish their goal. Possibilities include car/truck bombs & even home made chemical weapons. (Ricin can be extracted from home grown Castor beans, home made Sarin gas was used in the 1995 Tokyo subway attacks.) Personally, I would rather them have guns.
Stress the failure of the mental health system in identifying & providing treatment for those who need it.
IMO, the following are real common sense solutions:
-Training programs for police officers & other first responders to better enable them to identify & handle people who may need care.
-Establishment of a response system so that these individuals can be professionally evaluated right away, preferably on-site by an on call professional.
Had the Newport, RI police dept had these resources, 13 people would probably still be alive today
A Psychologist or Psychiatrist would have been able to tell that Aron Alexis had major problems within a few minutes.
True parity insurance coverage for mental health conditions, even if minor. For example, a cut finger that needs a couple of stitches is most certainly covered by all health insurance plans. Trying to get a therapist visit covered after a major life event is almost impossible. Current regulations only require care for "serious mental illness". Adam Lanza's mother had great difficulty getting him proper care, apparently even a condition that had the possibility of turning someone into a mass murder was not considered "serious". Obama care regulations make this situation even worse.
