Bought new varmint gun
« on: December 06, 2013, 06:15:56 PM »
Decided to get a new varmint gun today. Bought a Remington 597. It's a 22lr auto-loader, with a scope. Look out tin cans and ground hogs. I hope this will keep me from getting bored this winter.

Let me know how you like that gun.  I was thinking of getting one just make holes in some paper.  $200?

There were a few .22LR rifles without scopes in the $160.00 range, but they were very light and no as well made. I was thinking about a Marlin 60, but they are tube fed and there is a history of guns falling over, when leaned against something, and denting the tube, rendering the gun inop.
So I went with a mag fed.

I just acquired a Model 597 with scope.  I'm really looking forward to shooting it but I wish it was the heavy barrel version.

Condition 1,
I considered the Ruger 10/22, but did not want to pay that much for the limited use It will get.

Joek,
I wish mine wasn't so heavy.

Took the 597 to range yesterday.  Nice little rifle.  The only complaint is the magazine kept jamming on the first few rounds of just about every other magazine when full.  I read online this is a common problem and Remington was exchanging the older generation magazines but I have not did any research into it yet.

One thing I've learned already with my 597 is when you load the  mag you have to put the ammo in so it sets on and angle so it feeds correctly. Check you owners manual for proper loading . I did it wrong at first.

May I suggest you purchase an inexpensive "fox" call.  My favorite is a small wooden call that imitates the cry of a small mammal who is being eaten alive.  Not too loud, but able to be loud if needed.  When ground hogging, with no chucks in sight, start with a little mewing,  ewwww ewwww very softly and sit and wait.  No chucks, no fox, no coyotes, then a little louder.  Won't be long before you have a nice critter in your cross hairs and let that .22 bark.
just my opinion.

I've been married for 13 years... I can make that noise without accessories.

Don't worry OGG. I've been married for 50 years and by now it just doesn't matter. Either that or I'm just too weak to squeak......Ha Ha.
