I'm Rethinking This Place!
« on: February 07, 2014, 11:01:40 PM »
After spending some time at Kent General emergency (not for me) it is clear that the entire section is a high risk area after midnight.  I will never, and I mean never, be in there unprotected again.

Don't blame you. I carried in the Christiana ER.
Of course, I also left my car right at the curb: nobody messes with a white Charger Police.  ;)

My mom lives right up the street from the hospital on State Street. I would consider the area to be "nice"... people take care of their homes, very few renters, etc.  Whenever I'm in Dover, I carry. It wasn't too long ago that she asked why I always carry while I'm in her house. (She and my Step Dad both have handguns and their permits to carry). When I explained that while she has nice neighbors, the crime rate in her immediate area is quite high... she basically said she feels that because they've never had anything happen at their house, then how bad could it be.  She's had her permit for I think about a year and a half. She's carried one time. My step dad carries routinely. They go to the range and shoot several times a month. She says she doesn't carry because she just doesn't think about her gun. I really wish she would open her eyes and realize what's going on right around her, let alone a few blocks away, before something happens.

As far as KGH (Bayhealth) is concerned, I've had several surgeries there and never had a problem. BUT, I've heard stories from other folks that makes me wonder about that place. My mom has worked there for the last 30 years and thinks highly of it.

Here's some good ways to keep updated on crime stats in your respective areas.  Moosie, it may also be a good way to finally convince your mom of the reality of how much crime is in her area if she doesn't believe it's really happening.

I believe you can search the entire state of DE with this map:
http://www.delawareonline.com/story/news/crime/2014/01/27/map-delaware-crime/4935097/

IIRC this will only show NCC DE:
http://www2.nccde.org/Maps/PoliceCrime/default.aspx

This is a site that you can sign up for text alerts for crime in your area.  I have mine set to a 10 mile radius and the days I DON'T get an alert are very rare.  It sends the alert after it happened not "at the moment" of the incident.  I believe it's b/c they have to wait for the report to be generated before they inform the public.

Also there's a free iPhone app that I <unfortunately> use a lot.  It's called Scanner Radio Deluxe.  You can set alerts by how many people are scanning the channel.  I have mine set at 10 b/c usually if there's that many people listening it means that there's something going on that I need to be aware of.
