Cabela's got ONE thing right...
« on: May 06, 2014, 12:39:48 AM »
Only one thing, but it's a big one.

The "Brandywine Grille" was a huge disappointment: they had some mediocre sliced bison & elk sandwiches, but no wild game bratwurst. We used to plan trips to Oklahoma around stopping at the Cabela's in Wheeling WV for bison brats at lunchtime.
Their ammo selection was better than Dicks (but whose isn't?).
The handguns? Meh. They do have a Glock 41 in stock, which I did fondle, but it was at full retail price. Even if it wasn't, I'd much rather take my business down to Chris in Middletown... but I knew that before I walked in.

But, they have a sign at the door that says you need to check your firearms on the way in... except for concealed carry permit holders who are planning to keep it concealed.
At least they got that right.

I'll keep buying my guns at Federal Firearms, but I'm sure Cabela's will end up selling us clothing.

I went for the first time yesterday and saw that sign as I walked in.  Almost turned around, but read all the way through as saw the CCW part.  I had never been to a Cabela's before and really liked it.  I will also only be working with Chris for firearm purchases, I barely even browsed their selection yesterday.  I did spend some time in the ammo aisles and found some CCI .17 hollow points for my friend.  He said he has not been able to find them in so long, he was thinking about abandoning his favorite rifle.

At least they got that right.

I'm not sure I'd say they "got that right", especially in a State where open carry is legal and it costs $400-500.00 to get a concealed carry permit.  But I guess it's better than a "gun-free-zone" sign!

I have seen people open carry at the Delaware Cabela's.  I do believe store policy is to allow both open carry and concealed carry.

The sign in the store foyer flanked by two employees says:
-------------------
ATTENTION
Firearms Check-In Station
We care about your safety
Please check in firearms here
brought in for service, fitting, or trade.

This does not apply to
concealed-carry permit holders who
intend to keep their firearms concealed.

I heard second-hand that they allowed DE residents to OC.

The sign at the door explicitly say they allow CC, nothing about OC. I have no problems with that at all. The store is awesome.

Oh, I misunderstood.  I thought the sign was specifically prohibiting open carry.

I also interpret that sign as banning open carry in the store.

I read this as a check-in location "Firearms Check-In Station" for firearms being brought it for service, fitting or trade. They are concerned about their customers safety in that they don't want someone bringing in a firearm which will be handled that could still be loaded.  ;D If a CCDW permit holder all is good and OC doesn't need to be in print since its state legal already.  :D

Thats how I read it anyways. Now that said.. I've long since stopped looking at signs on store fronts since they do not apply to me anyways. ;)

Several of the deloc crew have OC'd in Cabelas since it opened.  They have been asked to keep their firearm holstered.

So my interpretation would be correct in that handled weapons need to be checked in at their "Firearms Check-In Station" and holstered weapons are ok. Really for a department store, which they are, this is not a bad thing IMO. Way to many people out there don't follow firearm safety rules and accidents do happen.

I also interpret that sign as banning open carry in the store.

They allow for whatever the law is in the state that particular store is in.  OC or CC is perfectly fine.
