Sounds like another good guy with a gun story
« on: July 24, 2014, 10:37:59 PM »
http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/Mercy-Fitzgerald-Hospital-on-Lockdown-268489642.html

A female case worker has been killed and a doctor shot after a patient opened fire on them inside a wellness center on the campus of a Delaware County, Pennsylvania hospital. Officials believe that suspect was shot by the doctor who returned fire from his own gun.
The shootout took place inside a doctor's office in the psychiatric unit at the Sister Marie Lenahan Wellness Center located along the 1500 block of Lansdowne Avenue in Darby, Pa., officials say. That's located across from Mercy-Fitzgerald hospital, on its campus.
Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan says the male suspect, identified as Richard Plotts, of Upper Darby, had come to the unit with his 53-year-old case worker. They then went behind closed doors in the doctor's third floor office when a confrontation occurred. Plotts, who has "psychiatric issues," pulled out a gun and started firing, Whelan said.
Both the doctor and the case worker were hit by the gunfire. The woman was killed and the doctor grazed in the head, Whelan said.
The DA said preliminary information shows the doctor also pulled out his weapon and fired upon the suspect.

Other doctors and case workers then rushed into the office and tackled the man to the ground, wrestling with him for the weapon, Whelan said.
“We’re not exactly sure what had occurred and what might have precipitated this particular incident," Whelan said. "We do know the psychiatric connection, we have that concern, however we don’t know if there was another dispute that occurred inside that room that led to these shots being fired."
Both Plotts and the doctor were taken to the trauma center at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in nearby Philadelphia. The suspect is in surgery and is listed in critical condition, Whelan said. The doctor's condition has not been released.
The Delaware County Prosecutor's Office says a 911 call came in at 2:19 p.m. with the caller saying a doctor had been shot. The center and hospital was quickly placed on lockdown as police swarmed the campus.

Allen Williams was checking in his father for an X-ray on the center's ground floor when the shooting happened.
"As we were giving the information, they said the hospital is on lockdown and they locked out the doors. They told us to sneak out the back door," he said. “I was hoping everyone was going to get out safe."
Williams slowly led his father, who uses a walker, in a group of 15 people onto a grassy area outside the building. He says police are keeping them at the scene as they check the building.
Police evacuated the wellness center and SWAT officers swept the building as a precaution.
A large police presence from Yeadon, Haverford Township and other Delaware County law enforcement agencies remains on the scene.
The Sister Marie Lenahan Wellness Center has physician offices and offers outpatient services for ambulatory care, audiology, cardiac rehabilitation, radiology and hearing and balance, according to the health system's website.

Another mentally ill nut case. But they will find a way to blame it on the gun, no him.

However, this time, the would be victim was armed and able to defend himself.
Therefore the story will not be deemed news worthy.

"Police evacuated the wellness center and SWAT officers swept the building as a precaution."

And the reason? It was obviously a localized incident and the mentally ill nutcase was in custody. The entire situation was resolved with a gun owner (don't know if he was legally carrying or not) and concerned, responsible and brave people. I remember a time when a couple cops would have arrived, made an arrest, made sure injured were looked after then left and filed a report. Today they need to justify thier militarization with lockdowns and sweeps.

Bend over, here it comes:
Quote
It was not clear why Silverman, a doctor for nearly 25 years, was armed at the office. Bernice Ho, a spokeswoman for Mercy Fitzgerald, said Thursday it was against hospital policy for anyone other than security guards to carry weapons.

I work for a large medical corporation in PA with a similar policy, so I'm watching this closely...

This just might be the case, at least locally that shows the futility of "gun free zones".  If the good doctor did not choose to ignore this ludicrous hospital  rule, many more would have surely died. Including the doctor and maybe the mush headed administrators who made such a policy.

The police have said the doctor using his gun probably saved a lot of lives. The shooter could have gone about emptying his gun at others.

Here is a link to an article in The Daily Mail (a British newspaper).

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2704715/Multiple-injuries-reported-shots-fired-Pennsylvania-hospital.html

Could it be that the British media has less of a liberal bias than our own?
I have not seen a single US headline for this story that leads off with the Doctor saving lives.

Have to lve this reader comment, below the UK article:
"Why does a doctor carry a gun? Americans really need to sort this obsessive gun culture out. A doctor is there to save lives. Totally indefensible".

Maybe it was Pierce...

http://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/psychiatrists-guns-likely-more-harmful-helpful-experts-n165286

NBC has found "experts" that say the doctor  would have been better off without that gun.

Wow, never would have thought that.   These "experts" sure know their stuff.  I thought ( silly me) that the doctor was better off having a gun. Now I know better.

Guess it would have been better if the doctor died as well as the staff and patients in that area. Then this might have been a good story for pushing "common sense" gun control.

That darn doctor was violating company policy you know.

Looks like the doctor used a Seacamp .32 automatic.    Not the best choice to say the least.  He apparently emptied his little gun and did not kill the perpetrator.   This is why I believe in training ( but NOT mandated by law). We have to understand that this is probably not a "gun guy" but rather just a doctor concerned about his staff and patients in what can be an explosive environment. That being said, looks like a .32 in his hand would beat a .45 at home in a safe.

Another thing: Looks like  the hospital realizes that their no gun rule is a joke and apparently are not taking disciplinary action against this hero.

"Hospital policy bars anyone except on-duty law enforcement officers from carrying weapons on campus, said a Mercy Health System spokeswoman.

The hospital said Friday it was thankful for the "brave and difficult action" taken by Silverman and his colleagues. It said he remains a full member of the medical staff and "we look forward to Dr. Silverman's return to serving patients at our hospital."

Good thing that, as I am sure the hospital would be the target of demonstrations and pickets if otherwise.
