Nova Scotia, Canada: Shooting Target - Halifax Shopping Centre
« on: February 14, 2015, 09:28:24 PM »
Thankfully the plot was foiled however this was a planned Valentine’s Day Massacre at one of Halifax's largest malls. I knew many people who worked there over the years and still know a handful who work there including one of the security officers. These areas were a few of my old stomping grounds in my youth. Where they found the body of one of the suspects (who shot himself once police arrived at his parents home) is not far from the house I still own there.

If it hadn't been for someone calling in a tip this plan would have very likely happened as authorities had no clue about the attack until the tip! The mall security themselves have no weapons training nor firearms on hand. The police do have an office in the mall however its mostly used as area base and is neither well staffed, often empty, nor armed. This had the potential of being a disaster on Valentine’s Day. Thoughts go out to many friends and family back home today.  :(

Halifax Shopping Centre named as target, Police lay charges in murder threats investigation

[Editor's note: During a news conference on Saturday afternoon, it was confirmed that Halifax Shopping Centre was the intended target for the alleged mass-killing plot.]

February 14, 2015, Halifax, Nova Scotia...RCMP and Halifax Regional Police investigators have laid charges against a 23-year-old Geneva, Illinois woman and a 20 year-old man from Halifax.

Officers in the Integrated Criminal Investigations Division have charged Lindsay Kantha Souvannarath and Randall Steven Shepherd with Conspiracy to Commit Murder. We do not wish to give these individuals further notoriety so will not be referring to their names again.

Information came forward to police via a Crime Stoppers tip that suggested that a 19-year-old Timberlea male and a 23-year old Geneva, Illinois female had access to firearms and it was their intention to go to a public venue in the Halifax region on February 14th with a goal of opening fire to kill citizens, and then themselves.  Evidence also supports that a 20-year-old male from Halifax was involved.

A third individual, a 17-year-old male from Cole Harbour, was released overnight without charge. Through the investigation, officers determined that the male was a person of interest. At this time, there is no evidence to link him to charges before the courts. The investigation is ongoing.

A fourth individual, a 19-year-old man, was found dead inside a Timberlea home. The death is under investigation by the Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team.

"RCMP and HRP have laid charges in this incident and have eliminated the threat," said Chief Jean-Michel Blais, Halifax Regional Police.  "This is a reminder that this type of incident can happen anywhere. Recognizing our citizens may be anxious in the wake of this news, we have additional high visibility patrols in and around the city. We encourage people to go about their daily lives."

"This is an excellent example that demonstrates the value of the Crime Stoppers program," says Nova Scotia RCMP Commanding Officer, A/Comm Brian Brennan. "The information came to us in a timely manner and allowed us to act quickly. We often ask citizens to be our eyes and ears in their communities and it was through one tip that we were able to intercept and eliminate a significant threat, and ultimately save lives."

The accused are scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court at 9 a.m on Tuesday, February 17th, 2015.

The investigation is ongoing.

Such a sad situation.  Seem like just aimless nihilistic youth.

No word on the type of firearms they had access to.

I know that part of the world.  I would bet the Canadian Maritimes is about the safest part of the Western Hemisphere.

It used to be though the past few years general violence has increased. I know several people have purchased shotguns for home protection who had never given it any thought. Others have gone the extra mile to get handguns as well. Still that's only good at home without any form of ccw there.

I've seen nothing yet in the news nor have I heard anything on the types or number of weapons.

That's why Canadians need to organize for pro-gun rights/self-defense rights political action.
