I have some questions
« on: January 17, 2018, 02:12:15 AM »
Although iv'e shot my wife's Saint and a few shot guns, iv'e never never gone much past that with owning a long rifle of my own. Iv'e always been fascinated with them. I'm thinking about buying one. but i'd like to know the up's and downs. what kind of range distance wise do they shoot. i know there are a bunch of different kinds, but i'm fond of lever action. I want to stay under a thousand for this part of my habit. Saw a video by Hickok45 shooting a 45/70. pretty cool. but i like the idea of easier to find ammo like 357/38. saw this listing at you know where. opinion's.

Impossible to answer in this space.  Depends on what you are looking for.  Fun rifle, long range,  accuracy, hunting big game or not so big, etc.  A fun rifle in .357 or 45 colt might be a Henry.  Lever action, good looks, made in USA, under $1K.  A 45/70 is a BIG caliber gun but not long range.  Something long range with a punch, .338, 30-06, .300 mag, etc.  .308 is a good all around caliber, long range, ammo not so expensive.  Shorter range but good for deer, medium game, 30-30.  Just fun plinking, cheap to feed, Ruger 10/22 in .22 LR.  And the list goes on and on.

we have a rugar 10/22. but it's like shooting an air gun, fun for plinking. My wife has her Saint. want something in between. Something good for hunting or for a dyer situation being able to take down a two legged predator Maybe the 30-30 is more what i'm looking for. will have to go out and put my hands on one, watch a bunch of videos before i head out to see Chris.

My next question would be that even though i am right eye dominant, i'm a lefty. Are there any companies that make a left handed lever action rifle?

I have a Marlin 336 Lever Action in 35mm in my Rifle collection  ;D
I couldn't pass up the price on it, $100 with a nice scope, strap and bag.
My older brother lost interest in it a long time ago.
I love the Rifle & took my first and last 8 point deer with it in the Catskills when I lived up in NY.
Ammo for it is pricey these days so I don't shoot it much.
If you're looking for something to shoot at the Range or to Hunt with have a look at this --> Savage® Arms AXIS II XP Bolt-Action Rifle and Weaver® 3-9x40 Scope Package
http://www.cabelas.com/product/SAVAGE-AXIS-II-XP-W-WEAVER-SCOPE-RIFLE/1849999.uts
I would suggest .308 caliber but there is a few listed. Chris may even have one or can get it for you.
I would watch out for hard to find and pricey ammo unless you have money to blow.

Really....35MM(1.38"), that must kick like a pair of mules.

Not sure about lefty lever guns, check w/chris.  There are several that make lefty bolt guns.  IMHO, 30-30 is a bit powerful for defense.  Far too likely to go thru and do other damage.  For home defense, a nice short barrel shotgun in pump(that sound of the action racking will scare anyone away).  With a step or two smaller than 00 buck, little chance of missing in close quarters.

i have 3 different 9mm's and a 45, plus a 380 for home defense. Plus in my truck i keep a bond arms snake slayer that shoots 410 shotgun shells. I keep PDX and 000 buck in it, so if anyone got to close, they're not walking away.

I like them too. I'd really like a Winchester, but I may settle for a Henry.

I enjoy the old westerns.

I would recommend a henry in a lever.....from there on caliber will be what you like....45/70 will be the more expensive but super cool to shoot...rest, 38,44,45lc etc are fun and not too expensive to shoot.....
marlin is making better rifles and that is an option for you...if you don't want to spend too much i have some rossi that are dirt cheap.

I went to Dick's to take a LOOK at the Marlin. It felt good in my hands, not to heavy. I said to the sales guy, i'm gonna want to put a scope on it eventually. He says, not sure if you can.. Kinda laughed to myself.. So i said, here you go, handed it back, thanks for letting me look. Went back out to the truck and rode straight up to Federal Firearms.. That was my intention anyway, didn't know if Chris was gonna have one. What was i thinking, he's has a ton of everything. I walk in, see one, but it's stainless, and i couldn't resist. So now it's home with me. Love going to Chris and his wife. I'm always there longer than planned. Just enjoy the company and the all around atmosphere. Listening to other people buying guns and just making conversation. Looking forward to shooting this gun!
