Ruger SR22
« on: February 08, 2022, 01:34:03 AM »
A few years ago, I purchased a Ruger SR22, and my wife Purchased one as well.
We bought them for some inexpensive range time. In our case, probably the worst
purchase we could have made. The only ammo it will reliably cycle is CCI Velocitor
or Mini-Mag. My Take down lever, which doubles as the slide stop has shattered twice.
Sending my slide ten feet down range. Ruger told me they had never heard of this
happening before. I asked them if they ever watch Youtube? I keep these guns in
the safe, knowing full well We will never shoot them, but I don't want to sell them,
and make them someone else's problem. What would you do?

I have not tried one of these but looked up many reviews online.  Most say it is a nice plinker for practice and learning.  I can't imagine carrying a .22 for defensive purposes.  There are a few 'cons' but not what you mention.  The DA pull is heavy, but so are many SA/DA semi's.  As for specific mechanical problems, none are mentioned.  I am not a fan of plastic guns, but that does not mean others will not like them.  It is at least, a hammer fired gun, not a striker.  Ruger does make some very nice and usually reliable firearms.

I just added this for conversation's sake.

Thanks for the reply, Bill. I agree, .22LR is a real stretch for a carry gun.
Better than a sharp stick, but for a real bad guy all it's gonna do is @@@@ him off.
My EDC is a .357 sig, or .40 S&W, (depends on which barrel I have in it at the time.
My wife is a .380. An hour of range time with those calibers runs $70 or more.
We could run one box of EDC ammo in about 20 to 25 minutes, and finish off the
hour with .22 LR, and still keep the cost below $70. On retirement income, every
opportunity to stretch time/money is helpful. Maybe it's just our guns, but Winchester
is 100% fail to eject. Remington is about 50%. CCI is $18 to $22 a box,
(if you can find it) and at that we might as well stick with EDC ammo.
By-the-way, I held Ruger in very high regard, but after these guns, and the attitude
from customer service, I am no longer a fan.

Is the ejection problem with both guns??  Sounds to me it needs adjustment on the elector, not being locked away and not used.  Did you give the specific symptoms to Ruger?

Hers has been back once. No issues found, no repairs made.
Mine has been back twice, since it was tested both times after
repair, it was implied that it wasn't an issue with the gun and
if returned again, it would be for service. (billable)
I said I wasn't satisfied with the model, and asked to exchange
them for a different model. I was told no, that is not possible.
Both guns cycle 99/100 or better on CCI ammo.
Both of the guns have 2000 rounds each through them, before
I bought .22 LR conversion kits for our Sig P229's, which shoot
everything, and I put the Rugers away. I saw on the Glock Forum
that Ruger has made changes to the takedown lever and this
has corrected the problem, but the changes aren't applicable to
early versions of the SR22. Ruger has never verified this as
accurate., but I can see the difference when I compare ours to
SR22's on the shelf today.

Sorry to hear of your trouble. I've had the SR9 and used it as my EDC for about 8-9 years and never found any ammo it wouldn't shoot. and I don't buy expensive ammo either. Have shot different brands in hollow points as well. No problem.

Ruger definitely has some good products and USUALLY is known for good service. I know you probably don't want to throw any more money at them, but maybe a third party gunsmith could help. Maybe sell the one as a "parts gun"? Legally of course :). Better a few bucks in your pocket than taking up room in the safe.
Interestingly enough, Ruger apparently was the first to develop the semi-auto .22 pistol back in 1949.

I will try the Gunsmith. I do hate to spend any more on these guns,
but if a Smith can get them reliable, I won't feel like I'm dumping them
on someone. Thanks.

It is beyond me why anybody would waste money on a 22 pistol anyway.  Spend a few more dollars and get a real gun.
the 22 rifle is a favorite for shooting squirrels and rabbits and varmets.
But then again one never knows when you may be walking through a parking lot and be attacked by a squirrel.

Some people enjoy shooting without the high noise level, cost and felt recoil. Choices are good. I own 3.

Since starting this thread, I've found a company "Tandemkross" that
offers upgrades for the SR22. Also, Just Bill (a gunsmith) has offered
to look at the guns. Before it's done, I feel confident I can get these
guns reliable enough to put them back into range rotation.

My apologies for digging up an old thread. The SR22 was the first handgun I ever purchased. I had no experience with a firearm, and .22 seemed like the kinder, gentler way to get started.

Mine is probably ten years old now, and has been essentially trouble free. It came with two magazines. One had a slightly odd bend to the feed lips, and was a bit of a chore to load properly. Ruger replaced it no questions asked. I've since purchased several additional spare mags for it, and all have functioned flawlessly. It is the firearm I use to train all my children.

It does have the occasional FTF, which I expect is perfectly normal for rimfire. Quite often a second strike will set off the round. If not, tap-rack-bang always works. Mine will cheerfully eat Reminington RGBs, Winchester M22, Federal Champion, and of course CCI Mini-Mag. Basically, it's happy to cycle anything that isn't subsonic. It will fire the subsonic just fine, but you have to rack it after every shot.

I've heard of the issue you described with the takedown lever. I ordered an allegedly "indestructible" polymer replacement part, but never got around to installing it. I never needed it, as my factory original part has never broken. I'll see if I still have it in my parts drawer, and I'll let you know where I purchased it.

Sorry to hear yours is giving you trouble.

Ruger SR series is a great gun, but I look at the 22 as strictly a target pistol. Better look at the SR9 or SR40 for stopping power.
