background check??

I just bought the wife a new .22 mag pistol.  When asked for ID I gave license and carry permit.  They said the permit no longer had any benefits.  I thought that permit holders were exempt from NICS.  Did I read it wrong??

They used to run two background checks, federal and state. Your CCDW exempted you from the state check. Now it is combined into a single federal check, so your permit doesn't help.
